Default Rochester PA...need info...FAST!

Good Morning,
I need someones help. My son who is 22 plans on attending Beaver Falls Community College (air traffic control) this summer, possibly May. He is stuck between the proverbial "rock and a hard place." He is waiting to hear about a job transfer to Pittsburgh airport (United airlines)...this does not look promising. His girlfriend is pregnant and due in August. She is NOT working and so the money is definitely running out if it hasnt already. They no longer have an apartment as of April 1 (he was really counting on this transfer). Unfortunately they have a dog that hates other dogs, because "the girlfriend" cannot give up the dog (had for 2 months) they have nowhere to go. I have a dog as well as her mother who has 4 dogs. So, having them move in is not possible. I cannot believe how this is turning out. Needless to say I am not sleeping or eating. Oh...they live in Virginia. Ok, now that I have probably confused all of you .....here are some questions....

1) How safe is Rochester? (they do have a house to rent)
2) Any ideas for jobs?
3) Any ideas/suggestions about anything in this incredibly depressing scenario?

Thank you so much for your help.

Since it's a river town in the Beaver, it's probably become fairly depressed area but that doesn't mean it's not safe. I haven't ever heard anything negative about it. Someone else who knows the area (PittNurse perhaps) should be able to give you a better answer.

Hang in there and try to find a bright side. Perhaps the girlfriend will grow up in time to become a mother if she moves to Rochester with the dog and has limited to no finances. It sounds like she needs a reality check. Nothing gives a reality check faster than financial distress. This might be your cloud with a silver lining. Imagine what a mess you would have on your hands if they did move into your house! The girl needs to learn that she needs to make sacrifices---and get a job! Maybe that's something she has to learn the hard way. She won't learn that at your house or her mother's house. One way or another, they'll manage. What's the worse that can happen? She has to give up the dog so they can move back to Virginia because they can't make it financially in Pennsylvania?

1. Rochester is safe. It's a little run-down, but what isn't in Western PA? Neighboring towns of Bridgewater and Beaver offer some cool things to do. I dated a girl A LONG time ago from Beaver, and I spent alot of time in the area. I never had any problems there.

2. I assume your asking this for the "girlfriend". Aside from $7.50/hr type stuff,
the area doesn't have much to offer. Trust me, this will be a temporary move for them. The area has very little to offer in terms of jobs. Even for college grads.

3. Since there's now a child involved, the only thing you can hope for is that they stay together and mature together. Hopefully everything will work out. Their situation is actually commonplace in this area, so they won't get any criticism from the community. Be advised they are moving to an extremely depressed area and economy. If they are used to VA, they are in for a huge shock. While Rochester and surrounding areas are pretty safe, they're very poor. You can live like a millionaire in Northern VA on 35k/yr
here. LOL , it's almost the same comparison that people make with regards to money to Mexico! At any rate, expect them back "home" within 1 to two years max. As I said, it will be a temporary move. Advice? Wish them the best
and celebrate the fact that you are going to be a grandparent. Regardless of how you feel about the girl, recognize she's young and probably very frightened herself. Perhaps she has some maturing to do, but rest assured that process is about to speed up pretty quickly.

Would certainly agree with sealerpal. Rochester and Beaver County are generally safe, but VERY depressed. There are no real jobs there. It might take months to land one. I am not being a wet blanket, that is simply the truth.

I believe the name of the college is Community College of Beaver County. They might have some sort of job service for their students. If the GF is having a baby, she will probably need to wait until she delivers to look for a job. Hopefully this will all work out. I have a 23 yr old daughter, I can empathize with you.

The ATC school is at community college in Center TWP. and at the Beaver County airport in Chippewa. Beaver Falls is just a mailing address. Rochester is right between them both. Everybody else has pretty much hit the Rochester nail on the head. As long as your son doesn't go looking for trouble, he'll be ok. The Rochester Chief of police is a good friend of mine. It's not a bad town.

Airlines.... United has very few mainline flights if any. I see mostly commuters there. It's a very high seniority station for them. I wouldn't hold my breath for a transfer.

USAirways is not hiring in Pit. The junior person has twenty years. I'm barely holding on myself.

SouthWest seems to have a young workforce. They only have a couple of gates, but are very busy. There are also several thousand furloughed USAir employees that would give their left nut to work for SouthWest. Your son could give it a try though.

The Girlfriend..... Tell her to grow up. If that dog hates other dogs, it will also hate her new baby. Will she be able to live with her selfishness when her new baby gets its face ripped off? Being a parent means putting your own needs aside, and doing what's best for the kids. When she gets here, do you want me to drive over and put my foot up her ass so she stops sitting on her brains?

Forgot to add... He may want to try FedEx. They hired a few cargo loaders recently. If he's experienced, they might be interested.

Default Live Near Rochester

Hi. I live near Rochester...well, my mailing address is Rochester but I'm very close to Zelienople in New Sewickley Twp. Rochester is somewhat of a depressed area, although, there is Cranberry Twp and Zelienople not far away. Jobs might be a bit easier to find in these areas.

There is Beaver County which includes many towns, several that are depressed. The town of BEAVER (which is in Beaver County) is the county seat, and a very economically healthy borough. It has a thriving downtown village, and many affluent sections. The magestic River Road has gorgeous houses with spectacular views of the Ohio River, and are lovely, high end homes. Most of the houses in Beaver are well kept and nice. It enjoys an extremely low crime rate, excellent schools, a wonderful town pool, and many parks.
Please stop spouting off misinformation. I'll agree with much of what's been said about Beaver County, but the town of Beaver is outstanding.

I agree about Beaver PA... My mom's family were all from there, and it definitely has a totally different upscale feel as compared to many towns in the county. Kinda of a "Sewickleyesque" vibe for BC.

Beautiful old well kept Victorian homes abound with nice tree lined sidewalks, and a charming downtown. Good places to eat are very close (Bert's, Jerry's, Brusters ice cream, Brighton Hot Dog Shop) and as before mentioned the river is great for recreation. Major roads, mall, medical center, Brady's Run Park, and a community college are all very close.

Could live in places a hell of a lot worse in Beaver county than Beaver.
