As I look out the window on this rainy, rainy day (a rarity in CO), I can't imagine riding a bike anywhere. Considering there is a 50% chance of rain in Pittsburgh on any given day, I would think it would be difficult, at best, to ride to school or work. You would definitely need a backup method of transportation.

Yes, it sure does like to rain here, but I lived in Holland and it rained about 20-odd days of each month and I rode my bike every day! It is do-able even if some feel it is not pleasureable! I had a lightweight poncho with a hood and it was no problem. However, it did rain very hard two days this week and I would not have taken my bike on those days, but now I am old and cranky!

I lived in Hollland too! (Our Holland days were early in my father's career.)

It certainly is rainy in Holland!! Perhaps that's why I don't find Pittsburgh weather so dreary.

I guess I'm strange because I truly love rain. I love the sound of it. I love the feel of it. I love the smell of it.

The way people talk, you'd think the sun doesn't shine here in Pittsburgh----but that couldn't be farther from the truth.

That said, the flat terrain in Holland is much nicer for bike riding than Pittsburgh.

Were you old enough to remember the language? We had about a dozen different words to describe the different rains. I loved that as much as I loved other small differences in the language.

And no, Pittsburgh isn't Amsterdam, for sure, but there are some areas that are flat and sunny! -- enough days!

I still know some. I can stumble through a simple conversation. My sisters and I spoke Dutch fluently when we moved back to the states. Our parents encouraged us to continue speaking in Dutch together; however, we just wanted to assimilate. We probably would have retained the language better if our mother had learned it. My father always reprimanded us in Dutch so I know the likes of niet speelt and het einde very well. As for the rains, there simply is an adjective in between de regen for the most part. I never could read or write Dutch. I was too young for that when we left.

There's enough sunny days in Pittsburgh for me! I hate the humidity!

My Dutch, too, falters more each year. And yes, it is "light" rain; and "heavy" rain, etc. Not distinct words for rain itself.

I could read and write Dutch once but not as well as I would have liked. One of my children still speaks well; the other one not a wee word, not even her name which is Dutch. Assimilation can be good but not much for hanging onto language.

And, it appears sunny today!

Tot ziens!

You should join a Dutch internet site! I'll ask a friend of mine where the Dutch hang out on the internet for you!

I think the key is speaking the foreign language within the family, but speaking the cultural language in society. You're lucky one of your children retained it. My older sisters have a better grasp of it than I do, but they aren't fluent anymore either.

It's a brilliantly sunny day! There's not a cloud in the sky!

We should start commenting on sunny days all the time.
