Default And most the jobs are now gone

or are going to overseas where people will do it for alot less...I blame the greedy big corporations who wanted to enslave the lower the classes and take their health care away and benefits, it always comes down to the rich exploiting the poor, always.

It's not nearly as bad as you think and one of our upcoming, most successful populations is the tech/science/young professional crowd - believe it or not!

Default Pittsburgh

Let's review: Clean air, water, mountains & sking 50 min. away, rivers, lakes, streams, pro sports teams, inclines, top rated billion dollar airport, museums, broadway shows, victorian homes, tree lined streets, etc. Granted, not growth on par with NC, FL, or other "go to" areas, but also no gridlock traffic like Atlanta, out of control insurance rates like FL, or over built housing market like everywhere else. Perfect it's not, many issues to be dealt with, but for the most bang for the buck, quality of life, it should be on anyones short list.

I couldn't agree more, but you do need a job to enjoy most of what you had listed! Sorry, but I wish PGH had more jobs, so many of us would not have to move out or could move back in!

Where did you find the data on clean air and water?
What I found was this http://airnow.gov/index.cfm?action=airnow.national which listed Pittsburgh's air quality as moderate(most were labeled good).
This map shows PGHs cancer rates are on the high side compared to other states:
http://statecancerprofiles.cancer.go...&1&0&1&6&0#map

Furthermore when comparing Pittsburghs data with Columbus, Cincinnati, Jersey city, Grand Rapids, Raleigh and Lexington KY
Pittsburgh had
*highest population decrease (except Cinn)
*lowest median household income
*highest percentage of residents living under poverty level(except Cinn)
*lowest percentage of bachelor degrees despite being a big college city (except grand rapids)
*highest rate of unemployment, in most cases much higher
*less diverse(except Cinn and Richmond, which are about on par)
{I consider diverse to be having race populations other than white and black, and also foreign born people}

Also, every city I looked up had some beautiful photos. Lakes and rivers are found in many cities.

Getmeoutofnj, most of the negative data you site about Pittsburgh is skewed because of Pittsburgh's huge elderly population. Behind a few counties in FL, Pittsburgh has the highest percentage of people over the age of 65 than anywhere else in the U.S. I'm also not sure how old the data was, as Pittsburgh's unemployment levels have been sub-5% for a while now. If you back out the elderly population (as nature is doing every day in the city itself), Pittsburgh has the 4th highest percentage of people aged 25-34 with advanced degrees in the country. As for household income, you may be right, but keep in mind that SWPA's housing costs are 30% below the national average.

True, many cities have beautiful lakes and rivers, but only 1 is consistently rated as one of the most beautiful in the country.

Allegheny County has the second (or third, we may be dropping now) highest percentage of people over 65 of counties of OVER ONE MILLION POPULATION. I bellieve Dade and Broward are first and second. There are tons of smaller counties under 1 million that have a higher percentage of senior citizens. USA Today had one of those nifty color-coded county maps that showed it a couple years ago and I was surprised. I always thought it meant that we were the second (or third) oldest of all counties in the US, but we're not.

Re: "back out the elderly population": My kids used to do gymnastics. It was very common for someone to say "If I hadn't fallen off the beam, my score would have been higher". Well, yes! It's the same with Pittsburgh's elderly population. You can't take them out of the statistics, just to make the statistics look better. And why would you need to take them out of the stats to compute the percent of people aged 25-34 with advanced degrees? That number stands on its own, when comparing it to say, the % of people of the same age in another city with advanced degrees. It has nothing to do with the elderly population, which will be around for a long time. A 65 yr old will probably live 20 more years nowadays. And the older one gets, the more likely it is one will live to be 100.
