Some where in North Park there's a Gravity Hill -- where you stop your car, stick it in neutral and the car starts rolling up the hill.

I've heard that there is an old military bunker/base buried under the hillside under Avonworth School area over off Camp Horne that was sealed up long ago. Always wondered if there was any truth to that.

It's absolutely true. There was a control site over off of Gass and the site by the school was the launch site. They were part of the Cold War ring of defense around Pittsburgh and there are quite a few locations like this. The Allegheny County Police in North Park are on a former site as well.

Fascinating!

But what do you mean by "control site" and "ring of defense"? I do know that Pittsburgh was #3 on the Soviet bombing list, or something like that - I guess because of the heavy industry of that era. Does this have something to do with that "ring of defense"?

Shielding Pittsburgh business: Half a century ago, Pittsburgh was considered to be a likely military target

I grew up not far from the Nike missile site in Irwin. Not sure when it was abandoned. The Top 10 Soviet Bombing list, probably one of the few lists we should be glad that Pittsburgh dropped off.

The meaning of dropping off the list is - there's no longer anything here worth bombing. America used to have a decentralized economy and banking system. Today, if a nuclear power took out NYC and DC, the country would be done for a long time.

Pretty sure that's what I meant.

A Nike installation had a launch site that for whatever reason was separated by some distance from a site that controlled the launch site. The ring of defense was common language for the perimeter of missile installations that circled Pittsburgh. And yeah, Pittsburgh was a manufacturing powerhouse which made us a target for the Soviets. Edit; there are pics of AA guns on the farm where Ross Park Mall now sits somewhere on the internets.

I can't believe people are still talking about the B-25 bomber that went into the Mon. That thing was a teabag. Meaning, it went into the river and at night it came out. Had friends that worked in US Steel Duquesne plant that lived down on that side of the river. And, also who worked in the mill said that there was a lot of lighted barge crane activity on the river that night. You have to remember, the plane took off from Allegheny County airport after it picked up something from Bettis Atomic plant. This was during WWII. Hmmmm, I wonder what that was? I have no idea but I do know what one of the things that it produced many moons ago. Courtesy of the freedom of information act that some jerk pushed through Congress at the time and the well has since dried up after they realized that it was a big time classified breach of national security. The little item is used to detonate a nuclear weapon.
