Southside? Mt. Washington?
I got into Duquesne grad school and am looking to move there this summer. I'd like to live walking distance to nightlife. People have told me southside is where I should be looking. Anyone have good references for PET FRIENDLY apts under 600 dollars in this area?
Also- is there anywhere else I would consider living? I've seen Mt Washington and Allentown are close to southside, but are any walking distance to nightlife?
Any other locations I should consider in Pittsburgh?

I lived on Mt. Washington when I went to Duquesne and I liked it a lot. There's a decent business district with a grocery store and post office and dry cleaners, etc. There are a few bars, like Redbeard's, and it's very easy to take the incline down to Station Square, and from there you can catch a bus down Carson to the South Side, or the T into downtown or the South Hills.

First, congratulations on your admission!
Anyway, the South Side sounds perfect if you are attending Duquesne and want to be in the middle of nightlife. To be more precise, the South Side Flats is what people typically have in mind when they think about the South Side and nightlife, although you could also consider the South Side Slopes . . . but you have to be willing to climb.
fleetiebelle aptly covered Mt. Washington, so I'll just mention you could also consider looking at Downtown or even The Strip. Those are more getting to professional as opposed to student areas, but since you are going to grad school you might be interested.

You should be able to find an apartment in the South Side Flats for under $600 relatively easily. Though Mt. Washington is fine, it's not really within "walking distance" of the South Side exactly. Allentown should be completely out of the question -- it's far from anything and (I'm saying this as someone who essentially grew up there) not particularly safe.

I've been looking on craigslist, but the abundance of things are in Squirrel hill or other areas. Any other sites that may be helpful for finding a place in southside?

I disagree with the above poster... I think you'll have a hard time finding a 1 bedroom for under $600.
Most everythng in the SS is big, multi rooms, and being that the SS is in such demand, its priced in demand. Most 2 bedrooms go for a minumum of around 800-900... And they aren't exactly big at all.
But the location is excellent!!!

Do your craig's list search with the two spellings: South Side and Southside.
classifieds - craigslist
classifieds - craigslist
Pittsburghers can't seem to agree on how to spell it.

At some point I found out that "Southside Flats" and "Southside Slopes" are the official names . . . and yet still I refuse to use anything but South Side, since that is what I originally learned, and I like it better anyway.
