SWAT responds to Uptown mother-son domestic

Friday, April 17, 2009
By Torsten Ove, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

This time, police weren't taking any chances.

When a call came in at about 11 a.m. today about a mother-son domestic dispute Uptown, possibly involving an AK-47, Pittsburgh police immediately set up a perimeter and waited for the SWAT team.

The initial call seemed eerily similar to the incident on April 4 that led to the deaths of three city officers, although in that case the 911 dispatcher failed to notify police that weapons were involved. No one made that mistake this time.

"Fortunately," said Sgt. Robert Miller, "today there was a happy ending."
SWAT officers entered the house at 34 Miltenberger St. and arrested the man, whose name was not released. It wasn't clear if police had found any weapons in the house, but the suspect gave himself up peacefully.

Sgt. Miller, a supervisor at Zone 2, said tensions were high because of the mention of an AK-47, the same weapon Richard Poplawski is accused of using to assault the three officers.

"All we were hearing is AK-47," he said. "There was a credible threat."
The incident was over in about a half-hour.
