Mattjd, So if I'm to understand you correctly a white person can ask if it is ok to live in someplace like Homewood (someone posted this earlier) or East Liberty regarding their safety, but an African American can't inquire about living in a predominately white neighborhood? Why does this have any merit? I remember seeing a cross being burnt on top of Mt Washington. Guess what minorities get harassed in predominately white neighborhoods also, their kids get picked on in schools there, police constantly follow them around if they can get fair housing. Just b/c the news does not report it does not mean that it does not happen!

A lot of Pittsburghers are very much set in their ways and wish the "good old days" would return. If I could talk my hubby into moving I would leave this city so fast, but that's out of the question. If this has offended anyone sorry...it is what it is.

Of course there are two sides to every story, and you did nothing to deserve this negative attetion, correct?

I don't believe you either, but if you are telling the truth then I think it must have been something you did... if you would have said South Hills Village or something like that, I would have thought... "darn South Hills Village"... but Monroeville (A shopping destination for the East End and Eastern Suburbs) I doubt it.

If someone wants to follow me around, I could care less if I was not doing anything wrong. I'll take a breathalizer when I'm sober or lie detector if I know I am innocent. I see people get defended when they feel that they are being followed around. It is no big deal unless you are up to no good. That is my way of proving them wrong when I pick up the merchandise and actually pay for it. When it comes to shoplifting, there is no perfect profile. It could be any race, age, color or creed. I know a lot of people who worked in loss prevention in retail and this comes from them. It could be your eighty year old grandmother who wants something but just does not have the money and puts it into her purse because she thinks she will not be seen.

A signficant amount of shoplifting is done by the elderly stealing essentials like toilet paper, soap and food.
That shows that we're not taking proper care of our elderly as a society.

Have YOU ever been followed around in a store? If you are there, legitimately, to purchase an item/items, it is annoying. Who wants people hovering over them or by them while they're trying to shop? Same thing when I'm at work and someone comes in and hovers over me while asking a question. Its annoying.

I propose that from now on every time someone uses the phrase "African-American", they must also refer to white people as European Americans.
Pghsucks, I have been called a cracker before; is Pittsburgh racists against whites err....European Americans, now too? I also find it funny that the word "cracker" is not asterisked out, and frankly I am offended.
This is a stupid question all around. There is just as much racism towards whites as there is against blacks around here, and i have been through all parts of the city. Bethal Park is a nice place, a good move for anyone regardless of race. I would say though if your looking for a place in between then look at Greensburg--A nice place with that about 45 min from Uniontown and 40 min from Pittsburgh.

That's BS Scott. For her to be at Monroeville mall is kind of hard to believe though. I get this type of attention also when I go to the more up scale malls around the Burgh. I get the looks and the workers following me around. Most of the time I just laugh it off and tell myself don't get mad they're doing there job. Seriously, it's so bad sometimes they follow as soon as you come into the store.
