Seriously, it's so bad sometimes they follow as soon as you come into the store.

That happens here too (Mass.). I went shopping with a black attorney friend of mine, and the minute we walked into a shop, the salesclerks followed us around. I was furious and said plenty about it to the owner and salesclerks, right in front of all the other customers. Funny thing, I looked like a bum (jeans) and she was wearing a suit, but they ignored me -- we split up to test them. Last time I'll ever go into any of those stores again.

No, it's like "people say I'm a strawberry-blonde, but I prefer to think of myself as just blonde, but I say strawberry-blonde/blonde because everyone always tells me what to call the color of my own hair." It's just her preference--she's trying to be true to herself but remain respectful of others who have a different preference at the same time.

Could it be akin to saying you're white instead of European American?

That was already covered earlier in the thread. I didn't want to be redundant.

Ohhh... So you interpreted it as saying I'm black, but I don't like the term African American... I must have missed that part

Yeah, it was earlier in the thread. The early bird catches the worm!
I guess my initial comment seemed really odd to anyone who hadn't seen her prior post.

Back in the 80s Jesse Jackson pushed the term "Afro-American" but I guess it didn't stick.
