Born and raised in Fayette County, and yes it's one of if not the poorest counties in PA.
Certain areas of Uniontown, especially the east end, should be avoided.

Also born and raised in Fayette Cty. Lived in Smock and knew the Rafters. Do you happen to be the Rafters from Smock. Agree about the east end in Uniontown. Always was bad. I hear the area around the old Thurby Dodge dealer is also bad. Don't know first hand but had a nephew almost shot there. He was knocked to the ground and had a gun pointed at his head and fired. Luckly the gun misfired --- he got away.

Hi Shenandoah ,
You said you had family members in Smock years ago. I grew up in Smock. I left there in 68 to enter the military. What were your family members names - maybe I know them!
Take care
Gene...

I hope you can help me. Two years ago my brother and I drove from Oakland, Maryland towards Uniontown. As I remember we passed over the Youghiogheny River and took a right and ended up in a charming neighborhood on a bluff overlooking the river. We stopped at a house built in the 1800's owned by a very sharp @85 year old man, a widower, who was having a yard sale which apparently was an endless yard sale. We drove around and looked at 3 georgous houses high on the bluff, all vacant. Then we drove down to the river to the little town. The roads were being worked on, and the main street was closed to traffic. Overlooking the river, high up, were a few buildings that were
formerly warehouses. One caught my eye and I thought it would make great lofts. It was only three stories but overlooked the river.
The yard sale man pointed out a landmark you could see in the distance, I
remember it as a mosque (unlikely) or something like that, part of the college?
We went back to Uniontown today, spent all day looking for this village to no avail. We went to Markleysburg, Addision and Confluence, no success.
Any ideas?

I am familiar with this area growing up in Fayette County. If you passed over the Yough Dam and made a right, there are only two towns on the Yough (before Connellsvile) that you could have encountered. They are Confluence, which is close to the dam, and Ohiopyle, which is further down river. Ohiopyle doesn't have many houses since it is surrounded by the park. There are definitely no warehouses in Ohiopyle. This also doesn't sound like Confluence but I haven't been there in a while. This also doesn't sound like Connellsville since C'ville doesn't really have a high bluff overlooking the river and the "little town." Connellsville has around 8-9,000 people. My guess is you made a left and were someplace in West Virginia. Look at a map and see what small towns are on a river.

Darling you are coming from Chicago, there is nothing unsafe about it. Tell me your grandfather's name and I'll see if I can frind you some realatives. Maybe there are some you can meet. Boring, but not dangerous
