Recession Proof stuff to do in the Burgh
I thought I'd start a thread for things to do in Pittsburgh (whether it's nightlife, lessons, fun, entertainment, whatver...) for stuff to do when you are low on cash. Any suggestions?
I know of free concerts (Station Square, Regatta, Arts Festival, Co. Parks, etc.) and the Citiparks Cinmeas in the Parks.

Buy a bike - I ride every day. After the initial purchase it is extremely cheap. I got a book on bike maintenance so I don't ever have to bring it into a shop as well.
Frisbee golf course in the park is fun also. I know it is a 'college' thing to do, but it is free and can be a fun afternoon.
Bar Louie in station square - $1 burgers every tuesday with $3 drafts for happy hour. Not THE cheapest, but $4 for a burger and beer isn't bad at all.
Silky's Sports Bar in Squirrel Hill and Bloomfield has free wings until 6:00pm every friday if you are drinking. Buy one drink, eat wings, watch sports...not a bad deal...

I just get wasted on Old E and PBR and hate life.
Really though, My crash was well before the recession when I ran into major credit card debt, and came back to Pittsburgh to settle down and pay it back. I enjoy life with museums, taking photos, going to state parks, and even visiting other cities cheaply. I go to them and take photos and visit their museums. I don't go out to bars and restaurants like I use to. I use to buy expensive beer and maybe drop more than 100 dollars a night. Now only a couple bucks. Museums are cheap, and if you have a camara, taking photos is free.

You beat me to it.
Biking, other than my wife, is my passion. Especially off road cycling (mountain biking). Living near Frick Park is such a blessing to me, plus all the other parks like Boyce, North and South Park, Deer Lakes, etc offer some of the best cost free pleasure you could experience.

One of my favorite things to do: Buy a pirates ticket from a scalper for $5. Then, go into the park and sit right down behind the dugout (nobody will care). Works the best during weekday games.
Go for a walk in Frick Park and watch the dogs play at the Hot Dog Dam.
5000 yucks for only 5 bucks at the Funnybone, Station Square every thurs. (2 drink min.).
Walk around the strip district on Sat - lots of random stuff and people to see.
Ride bikes in Frick Park (or one of the many others).

Silky's, in Bloomfield on Liberty Avenue - Free wings during Happy Hour from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m on Friday evenings.
Questions Nightclub, in the Strip District, on Smallman Street, next door to the Sports Rock Cafe - Free entry and free buffet during Happy Hour 5-7 p.m. on Friday evenings. Live DJ. R&B/Hip-Hop.
There are free jazz concerts, up Highland Park (the top part by the reservoir), on Sunday afternoons, during the summer, but I'll have to find out when they start. I don't have that information handy.

I'll echo what everyone else said about biking. Weather permitting, I bike the Montour or Panhandle Trail jsut about every weekend. The trails are so long that you can bike a different part each weekend and see something new each time. In the fall, the scenery is breathtaking.
Another cheap activity I enjoy is $5 morning movies at The Waterfront. In the summer, the AMC Loews starts showing movies as early as 930am on weekends. For $5, I see a movie and I'm out by noon, and still have the whole day free to do whatever else. Just don't buy any snacks, of course.

Doc's Place on Walnut Street in Shadyside has half-price pizza on Monday and Tuesday, You can gourge two people on $6.50 with one topping. (Of course, they're hoping you order a beer or mixed drink at regular price, but they don't mind if you don't).
