But, regardless of whether you are talking about depressed majority-white communities like Sheraden, Carrick or Allentown, or the black hoods particularly those south and north of the rivers, I don't think that the current city administration really pays any attention.

Its fine that East Liberty is attracting new businesses and google and all that, but the Route 51 valley (for example) could be a real showplace but now is basically a dump. The area at the bottom of Nobles Lane and Whited St. looks like heck, they still haven't cleaned up the site of the fire where the Bottoms Up Club more than a decade ago. That club used to attract city council people in its hey day not that terribly long ago.
Heck at this point I would be happy if they would relocate everything that runs alongside it between the Liberty Tubes and the new Dunkin'...widen it, and then do some flood easement with some natural green methods like retainment ponds and wetlands...in my mind that would be a showplace....

Do you have any idea how racist, elitist, and "out-of-touch" the liberals in this city would proclaim him to be if he did that?

How are middle-class whites supposed to stop blacks from killing each other in this city, tyovan4, without coming off as condescending racists? I'm just curious as to what your answer is for that. Blacks need to fix Homewood, The Hill, Sheraden, Northview Heights, etc. The "white" solution would probably be to put up a Starbucks and a yoga studio and hope everything fixes itself.
Because he's the mayor of the entire city, tasked with finding solutions to its problems & not just in the white areas maybe?
I'm not saying the violence is his fault & I agree that there are unfortunately a vocal minority here that will yell racism at any attempt at having an honest discussion regarding minority communities, but if you want to actually be a leader that solves problems you have to tackle these sensitive issues rather then merely be concerned with ones reelection (which given pittsburgh's track record, really shouldn't actually be a concern).

Given Corbett did nothing about the PLCB, it seems the Marxists got to him.

Flood easement can be done without large scale demolitions, in other areas like over in Millvale they've worked on Girty's Run.

The Route 51 Valley has the best mass transit infrastructure in the south, with the LRT line as well as the busway.

I learned this year that the City TRIED to do that! There was a master plan for the Route 51 corridor (which is ugly, outdated, & too heavily used) decades ago, that included relocation, flood control, etc.
So what happened? The suburban communities (Castle Shannon, et al) were not dedicated to it. There was no cooperation - I'm guessing it might have meant their spending their own money.

That area is akin to a highway in a former Soviet republic. It is atrocious for what we could have. Someone should resurrect that "master plan" (my words). Maybe that old mentality and the people who kept their grip on power in those municipalities has finally died off.

I did see that online.
I don't like Kraus much, but in his defense, that story is very "he said/she said".

All people have to do is....be respectful and NOT SMOKE IN FRONT OF THE GUY'S HOUSE after being asked a couple of times. But then again, we don't know the situation exactly.....

But I don't blame Kraus for flipping out on her (as she reported). I live beneath an apartment inhabited by a she-beast who must wear heels with hammer heads on them.

I just did a Google Street View of Council President Kraus's house and the pet grooming salon in question. the salon sits right on the corner of South 18th & Mary, with its front door facing South 18th, right near the front door of Mr. Kraus's front door next-door. If the employees had been told "a dozen times" not to smoke in front of Mr. Kraus's front door, then why couldn't they just walk around the corner and smoke on the other side of the front door---away from adjacent properties? It sounds like the pet groomer and/or her employees were antagonizing Mr. Kraus, so I can't honestly blame him for retaliating by picking up the litter from in front of their salon and putting it on her front stoop.

Coupled with arguments I've had with residents over parking when making brief deliveries to their neighbors because I was in "THEIR" public on-street parking spaces, I'm left to ask myself "Aren't there any nice people in South Side?"

As a 'news' story it's stupid, but it sounds like both the business & Kraus are acting like children here & like it or not you'll recieve higher scrutiny when you're president of city council. In this case, sorry Bruce you cannot keep people from smoking on a public sidewalk & clearly the trash as described did not come from the pet place but at the same time, what petty person calls the police over a couple of pieces of garbage.
