Default Neighborhoods with small acerage

Hi there,

well, we are now on our 5 day ¨getting to know the area¨trip and LOVE what we have seen so far.
One question, which are the areas/neighborhoods in Pittsburgh and just outside of Pittsburgh that might have big lots with them and feel a little more private?

Not inside Pittsburgh. If you literally mean JUST OUTSIDE of Pittsburgh, Reserve Township has land. It's a semi-rural area that is literally right next to the city, but it's older homes and probably not the type of area you'd like.

West Deer Township, O'Hara Township, Indiana Township, Harmar Township, Gibsonia, some parts of Hampton and McCandless --- are all fairly rural townships approximately 30 minutes away from town.

Parts of Shaler are still fairly rural --- like Sharps Hill, Middle Road and the Pine Creek area---just to name a few of the many araes. Shaler is very close to the city---some areas are mere minutes. But you'd have to be patient to wait for a house with significant land to go on the market.

Honestly, almost everywhere, in the city and outside of the city, you can find a house with privacy. Our wooded hills and creek beds leave little pockets of undeveloped areas everywhere. You just have to be patient to find those houses when they come on the market. There's an area literally right off McKnight Road where the houses are very private. Those types of properties are nestled away all over the place in Allegheny County, even within the city limits. You just need to find a good real estate agent who can help you find what you need.

Bradford Woods is in Beaver County, no? There are lots of places in BC where you can have a little acreage (1/2 acre +). Chippewa Twp, Big Beaver Borough, South Beaver Twp are a few of these places. A little far from Pgh if you are working downtown, but OK if you work near the airport, for ex.

Bradford Woods is in Allegheny County, north, near Wexford.... you might be thinking of my fave, Bradford Park, just over the Butler/Allegheny counties lines in Beaver County...

I like Beaver County for acreage -- but we're also talking more small farmettes....

I knew there was something with the name Bradford in it in BC! A lot of homes in Chippewa are on fairly large plots of land, 1-2 acres. Big Beaver has both that and some small farmettes. Our old "family farm" was partly in Big Beaver. There is a subdivision there named for my family. Just a bit of trivia.

Bradford Park is only about 5 miles from Bradford Woods, Allegheny County. Housing costs will definitely be cheaper in Bradford Park, Beaver County. The Woods is kind of like Shadyside with acreage.

The difficult part of the OP's question is that she wants acerage WITHIN the city or NEAR the city.

That's tricky. That's why I mentioned Reserve and Shaler. There's some places in Hampton on Elfinwild Road that are located in the woods---very private.

Since the OP wants to be so close tot he city, she really needs to look for the random, isolated house that you can find almost anywhere in the county.

I agree, Beaver is a great place to look and it's near a lot of the development west of the city (shopping, restaurants, etc). I think to have any significant land you would have to move out towards the edges of Allegheny if not into Beaver or other areas mentioned. When we moved to our current home a few years back, our real estate agent laughed when we asked about buying a place with at least an acre within the county. But we were able to find a place west of the city with almost 1/2 acre. And it's flat too, which I'm told is unheard of near Pittsburgh.

Most of the homes we looked at with land were hillsides and slopes. But with persistance you may get lucky and find something. Bring up your quest when you first meet with an agent and see if they think they can help you.
