Katiana, you often subtly twist people's words to strengthen (or even create?) your arguments.

Well, I've heard it all my life. I said that back a couple days ago. At the dinner table, at dinner parties, anywhere people gather. Also, I responded to a post, in this thread, that (paraphrasing b/c I don't want to go back) "Pittsburgh is leading the way in medicine, education, sports, recreation, etc". I'm sorry, that's nonsense. I work in health care and I can tell you, there is NO one leader. Ditto the others. I'm hardly the only one who does the above.

He keeps saying my argument is easy to refute. What's to refute? What major city do you know of that doesn't have one?
BTW, are you the poster whose name used to be "Outafla" or something like that?

No, I sincerely have no other handles on here. I have only sporadically posted since I joined. And by no means am I trying to be hostile. I'm making observations.
You might hear it a lot because you do it a lot, hehe. I appreciate the honesty there.
A lot of people who down Pittsburgh on here claim (I'm not referring to you) that "There is nothing to do here, other than drink." Obviously that is ridiculous. Pittsburgh has a lot of culture, some of it far superior to most other cities its size.
As far as the post you quoted, it sounds a little exaggerated for sure. I do think Brian is correct about the posted meaning that Pittsburgh was one of the leading cities in those fields, rather than THE leading city in those fields. But only the person who posted that can say for sure.
Regarding Brian, he said that our symphony is world-class, not that we are the only major city which has one.

LeavingFL4Seasons, you mention Pittsburgh has 'culture'. Could you please give some examples of culture than Pittsburgh has that other cities don't?

I agree with Katiana to some extent. If you like Pittsburgh, fine, go ahead and love the crap out of it. I have no problem with that, because it is subjective and everyone's opinions will be different. What I do have a problem with is people constantly bragging about being named one of the "Most Liveable Cities", or that the city is leading the way in something. Some people will take this straight to heart, and ignore any claims or opinions, or polls or data that might suggest otherwise. When people argue against Pittsburgh being this paradise that so many residents make it out to be, the Pittsburghers usually fly off the handle, from my experience. I've had this happen to me many times, when I had no intention of even starting an argument.
So I don't have a problem with people liking Pittsburgh, I have a problem with their closed-mindedness about the place, and unwillingness to listen to or look at any claims that might suggest it isn't the greatest place on earth. I accept their opinions when they say they like the city, so why can't they handle my opinion when I say I don't like the city?

I, to be honest, don't even utilize any of the cultural amenities at this point. I have friends who are involved with theater who have lived in other cities, who say Pittsburgh is better than most it's size. My uncle is a very intellectually gifted art dealer who travels all over the world for work and pleasure. He is considering moving to Pittsburgh due to the art community here.
I never said Pittsburgh has cultural amenities that no other cities have, or that Pittsburgh has the best cultural amenities of any big city in the US. I never saw anyone else say that either.
I'm certainly not in a position to fully evaluate the culture or lack thereof at this point.

There are people who are playing both extremes on this issue, and, as with most things, I think the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
Some people are cheerleaders, some are hell-bent on tearing the city apart, and some people recognize Pittsburgh's good and bad qualities, and love living here.
It's getting annoying with people twisting words.
Please point out when someone in this thread said "Pittsburgh has cultural amenities that no other city in the United States have." Stop dodging that request if your going to act as if someone actually said that.

In tvj's first post, the complaint was made that Pittsburgh lacks anything "unique" to do. The way I read the quote above it isn't that anyone has stated that we have amenities that no other city has. It's that our amenities are not "unique".
I don't understand why Pittsburgh's amenities need to be unique in order to be of value to tvj.

And, yes the burg has had some rough times, but I think the people in Pittsburgh are kind people. Sure you got your bad apples and crab apples but we have some delicious apples too. Here ya go for one, from this thread if you had taken the effort to look back. I'm not going to get sucked into digging through old posts to find something, only to have someone shoot ME down for "dragging it out", blah, blah. Has happened before. You didn't answer MY question, BTW. Did you used to post here under a different name?

Lionpainter sure sounds like he loves Pittsburgh! That is wonderful.
He does sound like one of the cheerleaders on these boards. And that is ok, as long as we can discuss the downsides of Pittsburgh without getting attacked by someone who refuses to see Pittsbugh as anything but the wonderful, glowing place described above. Positive, constructive discussion is so needed here. It would be great if we could accomplish that.
