With new restaurants in the Cultural District, a revitalized Market Square and office space going fast, one thing doesn’t appear to be selling quickly in Downtown Pittsburgh: condos.
Plenty are still available at properties such as the The Encore on 7th, the new Three PNC Plaza building and Gateway Towers, even as apartment properties Downtown boast waiting lists and rent levels unheard of not much more than 10 years ago.[/url]

As the article touches on, the balance of demand between condos and rentals shifts back and forth over time. Right now more people want to rent, which is fine--and in fact as noted, people might end up renting some condos to meet some of that demand. The reverse can also happen: if more people end up wanting condos at some point, they can convert rental properties into condos.

Downtown Pittsburgh may not yet be a full-fledged residential neighborhood, but Downtown resident Richard DeShantz hopes that his new Theater Square restaurant will be a neighborhood joint, the kind of place where people come weekly to eat and drink...Mr. DeShantz, who is also executive chef at the luxurious Nine on Nine restaurant a few blocks down Penn Avenue,

I think we already have some gastropubs, but in any event it sounds like a nice addition to the ever-improving Downtown dining scene.

Piper's Pub has been a legit Gastropub since forever. I'd actually say we've been ahead of the curve in that regard.

We love our neighborhood bars in Pittsburgh, so it makes sense that as soon as people started putting good food into pubs/neighborhood bars, that would spread fairly rapidly in Pittsburgh.

That place could be really good, but it is a TV bar. You know the ones with the TV playing all the time. If I wanted to watch TV (other than big sports events), I would hang out in my living room. It is called Piper's Pub? Why? I have seen pipers that walked in playing and they told them to stop. They were good pipers as well. The food and beer selection are good and the look for the place is nice, but the atmosphere isn't good, unless you like to drink beer and watch the Simpson's. That was what was on last time I was there and people were glued to it. Strange!

Apparently every place in Pittsburgh will soon be a gastropub:

Gastropub planned for Lawrenceville

I have to say, though, this is a great name and description:

Alchemy N' Ale will serve serve globally inspired comfort food accompanied by specialty cocktails, craft beers and wine.

I'm with you Curtis. I like to drink beer and play the jukebox. I have been told that I could not play the jukebox at various bars during American Idol, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Dancing with the Stars, Penguin games and so on. It is usually the bartender and his/her clique of regulars/friends who set this precedent. I wonder if the owner would feel differently about losing jukebox and specialty beer revenue, or is it more important to appease the American Idol watchers that drink Coors Light?
