New Sidewalk Connecting Aspinwall and Waterworks
The concrete has been poured for a sidewalk on St. Margaret's Hospital property along Freeport Road connecting Aspinwall to the Waterworks.
Although there has always been a path in the grass, this sidewalk will make the walk more 'walkable' for anyone who needs a sidewalk.
People moving here from out of town are always looking for sidewalks.
It's funny how most Pittsburghers can easily do without sidewalks.

LOL, I'm from out of town and I miss sidewalks. I like to walk on my lunch hour and my office park has no sidewalks. There's always lots of people out for a walk at lunch walking in the road with speeders and semi trucks. it's kind of ridiculous to me that there are so few sidewalks in this area.

LOL, it's funny...when I lived in North Carolina...there were sidewalks everywhere. My friends used to laugh because I would leave the sidewalk, and walk on the road/street out of habit. I was talking to a friend last night that lives in Moon Township and he was saying he was walking his dog and I asked "do you have sidewalks?" and he said yes, so I figured I'll have to start telling the newcomers that the newer housing plans in Moon have sidewalks

They won't last. As the sidewalks start to deteriorate, the owners will start eliminating them. There are quite a few neighborhoods like that in the suburbs. They were developed with sidewalks, but owners replaced them with grass. Now there's a patchwork of sidewalks alternating expanses of lawn inbetween. You'll only find a permanent assurance of sidewalks in the Pittsburgh suburbs via a neighborhood with a community association. But Pittsburghers aren't really into community associations so the choices will be limited.

...I don't understand the basic concept of this thread. Is it common for office parks and sparsely populated suburbs in other areas of the country to have sidewalks? Has anyone here been to Dallas or Houston? I spent several days walking along the unpaved sides of service roads in each of those cities.

The purpose of this thread is to inform people that Aspinwall and Waterworks will soon be connected with a sidewalk. The reason for this information is because some people have complained about a lack of a sidewalk from Aspinwall to Waterworks when people have recommended Aspinwall as a 'walkable' neighborhood. Now, they can no longer complain about that.

Apparently suburban housing developments do have sidewalks. Think of neighborhoods in Shaler, Hampton, McCandless.....anywhere really. There are no sidewalks and those housing developments aren't sparsely populated. Southwestern Pennsylvania just isn't into sidewalks like other areas of the country. (We get this complaint from people who are wanting to move here from elsewhere in the country.)

In Florida, yes. Just about every street in populated areas has a sidewalk along side it. Residential neighborhoods, business parks, main roads...all sidewalks.
Do a google map satellite image search of my hometown of Orlando and zoom in on the streets and just about anywhere you'll see sidewalks.
