If you have the money, you could go to the Nemacolin and Woodlands Resort in Fayette County. It is the only 5 diamond hotel and resort in Western PA. Also, you could head to Snowshoe, WV in the ski season and Elkins, WV year round. The Snowshoe area gets about 180 inches of snow a year; pretty high for being south of here.

By the way, the Atlantic seaboard is easily reachable for weekend trips, and obviously that represents a big change in setting from the Appalachian highlands around Pittsburgh.

Cooper's Rock in WV. It's near Morganhole, er a Morgantown. Google it for Directions but it's a State Forrest (I think) complete with a camp ground. There is an over look to view a splendid river valley and Plenty of Rocks to climb and explore.

There is a little known state park in Bedford County which is an absolutely gorgeous setting for simple picnicing, frisbee throwing, swimming, hiking and mountain gazing. It started as one of FDR's Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) camps which originated in the Great Depression. After WWII the Government turned it over to PA which has operated it since as Blue Knob State Park. The hiking is on varied levels. It provides a view that extends to the mountain ridges of 3 states. A Local reservoir offers fishing and electric motor boating. On site swimming pool with attendant guards. Extensive camping facilities with showers and water. A simple place which is never crowded --- until the word gets out. Weekend movies in the outdoor amphitheater. The best way to enter the park is to take US 219 to the St.Michael/Sidman exit. There you take PA Route 869 into the park. Go slowly as you approach the park entrance go low to appreciate the forest greenery.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I've been to Niagara falls, thousand islands, and a few of the places in upstate new york, all worth going back to. I was thinking more locally though, probably not more than a 3-5 hour drive so we could spend most of the day not in the car. We're definitely going to check out Ohiopyle, I've heard about it alot, and it sounds like one of the better PA state parks (at least from pictures). We drove past Clarion to get to Erie, and I distinctly remembering how beautiful it was, so thats another option, same with West Virginia... will have to do some research on that.
