Hi all! I am working on a schedule here, so please help me out if you can. Me and my wife and children are moving east. Accordingly, we're looking for a house in the vicinity of Pittsburgh. We know nothing of the place and that's why I'm posting.

We're looking for a place outside of the city in the country. A good 10-15 minute ride would be perfect, but shops and schools should be nearby. We want a quiet, safe, country setting with an acre or two at least, and fairly large house. Can anyone recommend where to start looking? We'll be using a realtor, of course.

Thanks!

Well, if you are willing to look outside of Allegheny County, you might be able to find some land. My experience with house hunting in Pittsburgh, and I've done it three times, is that there is little to no land (our realtor laughed at us when we asked for a few acres!). If they tell you they have acres, it's usually a hillside or steep slope. Now, if you are able to afford a larger home, you may have better luck.

I have lived mostly west of the city and you might be able to find land near Imperial, Oakdale and surrounding areas. It's a mostly middle class area with older homes mixed with new housing plans. A couple of friends of mine built their homes out there so you might be able to go that route if you can find land.

A lot of people on CD recommend the Peters Township area which is mostly upper class with very expensive homes. That is just outside of Allegheny County in Washington County. Lower taxes, but they are making noise about reassessing so you might want to check on that. Peters Township is not my cup of tea (I like more down to earth types of people) but it may give you what you are looking for.
