All these North Side Shootings
So there have been 5 or 6 shootings in the past week on the North Side. I just moved to this area and this is extremely unnerving. I feel like I cant walk West, North, or East. Should I be unnerved or should I just brush these off and not worry about it.
Yesterdays shooting happened no Jacksonia and Garfield. Thats not too far north.

I wouldn't brush anything off. A bullet doesn't have a name on it. Innocent by-standers get caught up all the time. If you're involved in something, and 'they' want to get you, 'they'll' get you. They're not going to care if an innocent by-stander just happens to be standing on the corner near the person 'they're' trying to get. Whatever is going on over there, needs to stop.......immediately. Its an all out WAR over there right now.

I'm sure a war is going on... probably drug related... That's usually always what it is...

I hope it ends soon. I live in Allegheny center and my friends and I always joke and complain about how many sirens we hear each and every day. The thing that unnerves me about these shootings is that they have almost all happened in broad daylight. I want to explore the area as I have just moved here, but with these things happening in the afternoon it makes me not want to. I heard the mexican war streets are very cool and I wanted to go check it out. Do you think it would be fine to go there as long as we stay away from jacksonia and that area?

This board's skittishness never ceases to amaze me. Yes, there is cause for concern due to these shootings. No, you are not going to be randomly hit by a bullet while walking down the street. No, you should not be worried about exploring the Mexican War Streets in the daytime due to these targeted and isolated events.
You could conceivably get mugged but no one is gunning for a totally random person. Innocent bystanders do NOT "get caught up all the time." People completely unrelated to the target of a shooting account for like 5% of the already low murder rate. I would avoid the Mexican War Streets if you also avoid driving on the highway and being near windows when it is storming.

War Street Resident here...
From eyewitnesses who were at the scene of the crime, the victim was not an innocent bystander, and was riding inside the vehicle prior to being shot. That said, it's no doubt unnerving, and upsetting for the residents who have invested a lot of time and energy into making that part of the neighborhood a great place to live. Right now lots of neighbors and the neighborhood watch groups are pointing fingers at the city and police department for letting things get too wild in the higher streets.
For the poster at Allegheny Center, you'll be just fine. Both of the recent fatal shootings in the War Streets were in the higher streets, farther back from North Ave and outside the actual historic district. If you want to check out the old rowhouses, you can stay on the lower streets between North Ave and N Taylor (Reseca, Palo Alto, Monterey) and feel perfectly safe, since the lower streets have a higher proportion of restored homes and more homeowners, which not coincidentally continues to yield less incidence of crime.

It's absolutely appalling that these young punks come into a neighborhood like the War Streets to do their dirt...Unfortunately the riff raff from Federal Street seems to lingere in that area due to it's proximity and until the police along with the community can make Federal St a SOMEWHAT drug free area...This problem will persist
I am starting to think Manchester will have an easier time to revitalize than the War Streets...
Does anyone know what they are doing with that Homeless Shelter on North Ave ????

The homeless service providers on North Ave. have begun the process of eventually moving off North Ave. Both the Salvation Army and Light of Life are run by North Siders who are great people, and they do a great job serving the community. They absolutely care about our city's most vulnerable, but do see the bigger picture... That a revitalized Federal North corridor, free of drug activity and filled with living-wage creating, goods and service providing, and prosperity sustaining enterprises is a better Federal North for all North Siders, poor, rich, and in the middle, than the present version. It's not that homeless men are the root of the crime and drug problems, but that businesses and investors shy away from investing in the Federal North corridor because of the fact that if the homeless service providers are there, they have reason to believe that many patrons will choose to steer clear. The service providers understand that their services, while vitally important, will allow for greater benefit to the North Side community by being located elsewhere.
