Peter's
Peter's is blowing up. We have a place to rent there and will take it for a year. The problem is that after a year, will we find a place that we can afford?

USC interest
I have looked at USC because of the school system. It is a Blue Ribbon School District and quite impressive. All the homes I have looked at in USC are way out of my price range. Are you suggesting that, based on my criteria, a home exists in USC for us?

In the city proper you probably wont find homes with much of a yard. I know you can get a house with a nice yard in the 'burbs. My grandparents live in Moon Twp and they have a huge backyard. Pittsburgh and even many of its suburbs and outlying areas have older housing stock. It's not cookie cutter at all unless you go into some new development.

Are you originally from an area where homes are expensive? Homes are very cheap in Western Pennsylvania. I think that your realtor is lying to you. They might be trying to take advantage of you because you are used to seeing homes cost a lot more and they are trying to steer you towards that.
There are tons of properties in the outlying areas of Pittsburgh that are nice, come with space, and that are under $350,000. Check out the real estate for sale section on craigslist. All kinds of stuff pops up.
For example, here's a house in Upper St. Clair (where rich people live) for $309,900:
Peaceful Retreat in USC- Open House 6/28 1-3
Here's a badass house with river frontage for $319,900:
House on the Allegheny River
It's cheap as hell to live here in comparison to California, New York, etc..

You seriously can get a nice ranch in a nice suburban area with good schools for $125,000 and I am not bull****ting you.

Then you really need to get a new realtor if you can't find this. I know you don't want the cookie cutter, but my husband and I are building a house for less than $350K. You can certainly find one preexisting.
$350K in the Pittsburgh area can get you a heck of a lot, especially as you get farther out.

Your realtor sounds awful! My family bought a home in the South Hills, and we looked at dozens of homes for under $200K that fit your criteria, from South Park to Bethel Park to Mt Lebanon. One home we looked at even had a backyard that was a full acre, and they didn't want a yard that large! It's absolutely a lie if a realtor tells you that you can't find what you are looking for in your price range.

I guess we need to know more of what you want in a house. How many bedrooms, square feet, how much of a lot you expect to have, etc. For example if you want a two acre spread that is one thing. But if you just want a yard and a 1/4 acre will do that is another thing. Something seems to be missing. Or your realtor has ignored your budget.

A quick search on coldwell bankers website for 15241 and houses under 200k pulled up 8 results. Here are a few:

Get a new agent, I think your current one is focusing on 350K. There are a lot of homes in Mt. Lebo/USC/Scott Twp for under 200K.
