Default Moving company advice

I am moving from Pittsburgh to Baltimore and was wondering if someone could recommend a moving company. I really need some help in deciding whom to select from the multiple companies in town.

We used Don Farr to move here from Texas and I was not impressed. Although they were not aweful, they weren't great either.

The truck showed up early (by about a day), which was a big deal since we were packing ourselves and were not quite ready. Some things were placed in the truck wrapped in blankets instead of boxes and some of that got broken. I had to be pretty aggressive to tape up some semi-packed boxes properly before they loaded them up. They put the little stickers on everything but then did not really used them to track and make sure we had all our belongings. I think a box fan was lost. The truck driver and his helper were nice, though.

When they unloaded (different crew - our stuff was in storage for a while), they delivered some things that were not ours - a grandfather clock and some art. The grandfather clock was put back on the truck immediately but we had to call the company twice to pick up the art. The unloading crew was not that impressive - kind of punks.

The price was right but I'd probably think twice about using them again. The company explained that they were able to give good rates on out-of-state moves to Pittsburgh, because they wanted to fill truck returning from other cities in the Southwest.

Part of the problem with any of the big moving companies is that you really are dependent on the particular crew you get. On the other hand, a lot of the smaller moving companies you might find online are actually fly-by-night scam artists.

In short, moving stinks.

South Hills movers, used them twice, stand up guys. If you can do it, move during the week, you get a lower price.

I worked for a moving company for a year (summer job). I didn't work for either of the companies you asked for though. Unless you are moving straight from your place in Pittsburgh to Baltimore (same day or two) chances are you will get different people loading your stuff and unloading (that was my experience at least).

The one thing I can advice you of is always check all of your stuff as soon as possible. There were people I worked with that broke stuff on purpose and most of the time they got away with it. Most moving companies have a policy of how long you have to claim broken things. So just check EVERYTHING and claim what is broken (hopefully you get good movers and nothing breaks).

Just an example...one guy I worked with (I wasn't there when they loaded...I unloaded the guys stuff) he put scratches in the owners solid oak dressers, night stands and I got the blame for it...wasn't too happy! Sometimes things happen but putting deep scratches in furniture isn't good...esp when expensive furniture.
