After awhile you'll learn all the quick ins and outs of Pittsburgh streets and the 4.2 miles will seem like a snap!
Yeah Pittsburgh roads make little sense, but you'll get use to it after awhile. One word of advance too, don't ask Pittsburghers for directions! You'll just get lost. Everyone around here knows their way around more by "instinct" which is extremely hard to communicate. Sadly I can no longer give good directions anymore either, but I can get around the city well!

tmorrisn, I can't believe the negative feedback you have recieved. I grew up not to far from Elm street. I no longer live there but have lots of family and friends that do. It is a great area. You will feel pretty convenient to everything, including CMU. You have made a great choice of family neighborhoods. Please explore the city. It has so many interesting nooks and crannies. Good luck in Pittsburgh!

Thank you nclover! I'm excited to explore the city.
And fyi to anyone interested, there is a park n' ride lot for the East Busway one mile from my new house, cutting my commute time down to 13 minutes!

I am still learning more about the Port Authority, but so far it already puts mass transit in Baltimore to complete and utter shame.

This is not very timely, but I wanted to note I live in Regent Square (near Braddock and Hutchinson), and we have frequently walked over to your neighborhood (we take lots of extended strolls). It is quite nice--if I understand correctly where you are, you are a block off Maple, which is something of a main residential street with lots of neat houses, and the surrounding streets all fit into that general mold. And if you are a walker or biker, downtown Regent Square and Frick Park are not far at all.

Thanks! Regent Square was our first choice, but the homes were out of our budget. Our new house is exactly a mile from the Braddock/Hutchinson intersection, so that seems pretty close to me.

tmorrisn, I'm so happy to hear the information from BrianTH! It sounds like you found the perfect place for your budget. Being only a mile from Regent Square is a big plus! I love hearing the area has neat houses. Let us all know what it's like when you move there. We can start referring people to the area who can't afford the likes of Regent Square, etc. I'm starting to really love CityData because I'm learning about Pittsburgh in much more detail----first hand from people more familiar with areas I don't know as well as others.

Default Random thoughts...

tmorrisn: A couple random things about your 'hood...at least really close by...and 'bikeable'...

Thriftique in Swissvale - a decent second-hand shop. They've got furniture, lamps, etc. Not sure how their prices are...
http://www.ncjwpgh.org/html/Programs/thriftique.html (broken link)

Triangle Bar and Grill: a legendary Pittsburgh submarine/hoagie/hero place in Swissvale on Monongahela Ave. The place looks seedy/ugly on the outside but it's virtually untouched indoors for over 61 years. They've got pretty decent sandwiches. IF you like sub sandwiches, they've got one called the "Battleship". Huge. About 3 feet long. At the least, a cheaper alternative to Subway.

Frick Park... great for hiking/biking...

Edgewood Tennis and Fitness Club http://www.edgewoodtennisclub.com/
No idea what it's like but check for student discounts. Pitt students often get some great discounts/free stuff, so I'm assuming CMU students do too...

I am new to Pittsburgh and live in Regent Square. We haven't bought yet, but are leaning towards Regent Square & Squirrel Hill. I know one person in Edgewood, and there kid goes to CAPA, which is a Public Pittsburgh School for the perfomrming arts. (I guess they pay tuition for our of district?)

Regent Square/Swissvale/Edgewood all seem to meld into one area. I am not sure where the lines are. One block from my house there is a "Welcome to Swissvale" sign. Just after that you walk by the "Regent Square" Theatre. I have no clue who lives in what nickname, but it is a nice area. You will like Square Cafe, Dunnings, & there is a GREAT Thai place on Braddock too, It called Mango (something)! Everyone walks, bikes around here and it is a friendly area.
