The town of Indiana IS a college town. See: Indiana University of Pennsylvania
I believe Philadelphia Street is in Indiana which is probably the only part of the county that isn't completely rural. Like I said, college town...so they have a small mall, some restaurants, bars, and other things. The rest of the county is mostly small towns like Blairsville, Saltsburg, or rural.

I am not from there but if my memory is correct Philadelphia Street is the main drag in the town of Indiana. Indiana is home to the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Jimmy Stewart. I would consider it a pretty good sized town.

thanks for the information.
if the college is right there, i imagine rents around the local area might be high. how far out would you think one would go, and in what direction, to find easier rent amounts?
for instance, north, east, south or west, 10 miles? 15 miles?
I wouldn't mind a 10-mile commute if the rents were lower by $100 or so.
thanks again.

When you go for the interview, stop at the Giant Eagle and pick up one of those "For Rent" newspapers or something like that near the entrance/exit. I've only been to Indiana/IUP once so I'm not sure what is available/how much and all that. If I remember correctly, Homer City and Clymer weren't too far from Indiana but I've never been to either to say what the life is like in those towns.
Personally, I'd pay the rent and stick to Indiana if you like living near conveniences (grocery stores, mall, restaurants, people). Also, Indiana County gets a lot more snow than the Pittsburgh metro so that might be something to consider as well.
