Which is the cooler, better, outdoorsy, SW PA town?
If anyone is fairly familiar with both Ligonier and Ohiopyle, would you offer your opinion on which is the better, outdoors-oriented community in which to live and why? Feel free to throw in other suggestions. I had earlier recommendations for Morgantown, WV, Homer City, PA and Slippery Rock, PA. Thanks!!

I like Ligonier, My wife is from there.
It's located near the middle of the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, via Linn Run State Park.

The entire (tiny) economy of Ohiopyle is based on outdoor recreation. Have you tried Confluence, PA?

I think Ohiopyle is sort of built around the recreational activities on the Youghiogheny River and the local cycling trails, so in that sense it's more outdoorsy. But Ligonier has better access to good shopping and restaraunts, and definitly doesn't lack in the hiking department. It's also a bit closer to Pittsburgh (I think), which is a plus. Kayaking on the three rivers near the point is awesome. Both towns are in fairly close proximety to one another though, so I wouldn't think it'd make a huge difference. I'd choose Ligonier. Oh yeah, and 7 Springs Ski resort is in the area too.
Morgantown is nice too, but more of a college town than an outdoors town. I love visiting West Virginia. It's beautiful.
Finally, no offense to anyone, but I'd rule out Homer City. It doesn't seem to fit the category of outdoorsy.

Ohiopyle is mostly water recreation.
Ligonier has more options like hiking, rock climbing, repelling, caving, fishing, hunting, etc.
Also, Ligonier is good for all snow related activities since the area gets more snow.
It's closer to the ski resorts too.

I'm originally from Homer City and I don't really think it's what you would be looking for.
Have you considered Armstrong County? Kittanning sits right on the Allegheny (there is a lock located there) and there are several areas where you can put in a boat there. Lots of people come up the river from Pittsburgh for a nice place to stop and relax and breath fresh air and see lots of beautiful natural areas. Big riverfront park with lots of activities. Several of the railroad lines in the area have been converted to walking and hiking trails, plus there are lots of rural areas for doing hiking, ATV trails, etc. Also it is a very drivable distance to Pittsburgh, Butler, Cranberry, Indiana and Clarion. Less than a 2 hour drive to the Allegheny Forest area which has lots of hiking trails, picnic areas, camping and just about anything else you can think of outdoors. If you are into fishing or hunting, no where is better! Lastly, the cost of living there is a lot lower than the surrounding areas. You can get a lot more house and land for a lot less cash. Overall a nice central area to country and city.
