Default if your not from Pittsburgh you never fit in?

When I lived in Pittsburgh that seemed to be the case and not only for me but for others. Of course that is true of anyone moving to a town where they never lived before. But Pittsburgh seemed more that way than other places for some reason. Nevertheless I am thinking of moving back in the future some time.

I have felt fine here as a transplant--with the exception of being a Ravens fan. But with even that people have embraced me. ( my coworkers recently secretly changed out my Ravens license plate for a Steelers one)

As a transplant living in the East End, this doesn't seem true to me. But the East End is what I think of as Pittsburgh's "ex-pat" area, so I can't comment on the city in general.

I agree with Brian 100 percent, I live near him, and get the same feeling. I to have only lived down here close to three years.

As far as I'm concerned, this city has progressed to the point where those who are natives and have a poor attitudes toward the growth and development are the ones that don't fit in.

I don't live in the East End, but I work at CMU, and a goodly number of my friends and coworkers are transplants. But the people who are from here have never been anything but cool.

The natives are nice, the area is fine, I just wasn't raised here so I don't feel like I fit in and I've lived here over 20 years.

People here have extensive families, friends and others who they grew up with who they relate to. I don't have those kinds of roots here. Plus there are not that many transplants so Pittsburghers assume that most everyone they deal with on a day to day basis grew up here, like they did. I mostly get blank stares when I say I'm from somewhere else. I don't know anyone in my area that has lived anywhere else but here.

There is also the cultural difference, if you will. I was raised in the south, where the culture is quite different. It's hard to adjust when you have different ideas and points of view, but that could be true anywhere.

What does "fit in" even mean??? Seriously... I'm asking?

Do people turn up their noses when you say hi? Or maybe you expected all 2 million people in the metro to invite you to their beach houses???

Pittsburgh is a big city, so everyone fits in somewhere... I don't know what you mean

Well I AM from Pittsburgh(since first grade) and NEVER fit in..I seem to get along with people from larger cities NYC, Phila., Atlanta..Chicago..

The big issues are: always loved to read, never got into the standard sports, have an odd taste in music
and can't get into drinking binges..and have finished college..and had to deal with ghetto types and
"yinzers" and less educated people..close-minded people...ok thats my mini-rant..

Some truth, some cynicism to your rant. I think it is somewhere in between. This is a university city, an educational center. There are plenty of people who like to read and are educated and are open-minded. I understand your point. In the surrounding river towns, the mentality of which you speak is surely prevalent. In the suburbs and in the city's East End, which is probably more than half of the city's population, there seems to be more polish in the citizens, which is not to be confused with being a Polish Yinzer. No offense anybody. I just had to.
I just had to.
