I also think Squirrel Hill/Regent Square sounds like a potentially good fit, particularly considering Frick Park is a great place to bike/run/hike. As an aside, I tend to immediately think of my neighborhood (Regent Square) when gay people ask about places to live in Pittsburgh, in part because a gay couple bought the house next to ours. In general, there are quite a few gay couples around--it really seems like a place specifically gay couples, as opposed to gay singles, like to settle down. Anyway, I would think the only potential issue with Squirrel Hill/Regent Square is budget and maybe size of yards.

I agree with the East End. Currently I live in East Pittsburgh and would plan to move to the East End as soon as I get my finances straightened out. There is so much to do (shopping, parks, dining, nightlife, the museum, zoo, etc.) It is also easily accesible to anywhere in the city.
As faras the suburbs, Dormont is nice.

East End yes. North Side, I wouldn't be too sure of. High crime in many areas. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of shopping, nightlife or culture yet. I think the North Side has a way to go yet...

Regent Square area. Edgewood and a few other non Pittsburgh towns meld together there. It is a great area, and also very gay friendly. It may be too suburban for you though, it is impossible to distinguish where the city/burb line cross.
Squirrel Hill is not a burb, I live there and I agree with another poster that you would like it here too. How could you dislike Mr Rogers Neighborhood?
**I should have turned to page 3 before answering Regent Square!

Another vote for Regent Square. I live in Edgewood which borders Regent Square (although some of Edgewood is considered Regent Square) and two male gay couples live on my block. These neighborhoods (Sq Hill, Regent Sq, Point Breeze, etc) tend to be more liberal than the suburban areas and are much prettier (imo)!
You really can't beat being close to Frick Park - it's an awesome park for jogging/biking! And all of these neighborhoods are not at all what would be in the city of Chicago (or at least what I remember from my stays there).

The Mexican War Streets is a mini gayborhood. Very active, older gay crowd living there. Check out Monterey Pub on any given evening and you'll see what I mean.

The Mexican War Streets don't meet his criteria. He wants a house with a yard in a safe neighborhood. There are few yards in the Mexican War Streets, mostly row houses with postage stamp back yards. And the Mexican War Streets aren't as safe as the previously mentioned East End neighborhoods.

If you go back and look at my post, I wasn't responding to the original poster. I was addressing the person that said the north side may not be a good place for gays (it is).

Thanks everyone. You are all great. I am going to check out East End, Squirell Hill/Regent Square first. We are renting for the time being before we buy. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

raubre doesn't say that it's not a good place for gays.
