Moving to Pittsburgh, how is Braddock Hills? Please share stories and/or insight.
I am a 24 year old grad student moving to Pittsburgh with my friend in the next few weeks. I prefer the off-campus lifestyle, with a yard, and away from all the noise.
After many hours of online searching for places, my friend and I finally found what appears to be the ideal place in Braddock Hills. It's sizable, has a yard, and the rent is reasonable. The area is around McKinely Street off Park Avenue. I tried googling and searching the forums here, but it seems no one has ever really discussed the area. I know Forest Hills is a nice area, and this is adjacent to it.
So can anyone offer some insight? Am I making a smart choice by moving there? How safe is it? Looking at city-data's list crime is well below the national average, but I know first hand accounts are always good indicators. Thanks in advance guys!

Braddock Hills is a nice peaceful area. Even the 'projects' (low income housing), in Braddock Hills (Brinton Manor and North Braddock Heights), are nice. A 24 hour Wal-Mart is right down the road, in North Versailles (even though this particular Wal-Mart has gone downhill over the years), and the Parkway East is a stones throw away, in which you can get to many destinations such as PNC Park, Heinz Field, the Waterfront, Kennywood, and much more, in a matter of minutes, depending on traffic.

Umm, Braddock sucks. As a white person, I wouldn't even step foot in that place without a gun. The place is very dangerous, very poor, and a flat out ghetto. The schools suck, the taxes are crazy, the housing values are terrible, blah blah blah. I can go on forever, but it is in the same category as Wilkinsburg, McKeesport, Duquesne, etc. They all suck. Some are worse than others, some have more or less crime than others, but they all suck. You can spin it any way you want, but that place is a dump and pure ghetto. I wouldn't allow my dog to go to the bathroom there. Of course, if you have $15,000 to waste on a house that's falling apart, don't care about hearing gunshots during the night, enjoy crack, and don't care about having your house robbed, go for it. Forest Hills and Churchill are nice areas...Braddock is not! Unless you're black and live on welfare, you won't fit in there. That's the non-PC, honest truth.

I'm just going to note without a lot of additional commentary that I live in Wilkinsburg, and parts of it are quite nice, and other parts are getting nicer.

I apologize. I wasn't paying enough attention and was talking about Braddock, rather than braddock hills. Many of my comments still stand though. Same poor school district (woodland hills) and I assume the taxes are still insane. I don't know much about the area specifically to say what the crime is like though, so I take back my previous comments about gunshots and it being full of ghetto black people on welfare lol.

What is the relevance you're getting at here? That Braddock Hills has good and bad parts??????????

As I could--and perhaps should--have made more clear, I was simply responding to an offhand comment about Wilkinsburg in a prior post.

I had a grad school friend who lived in Braddock Hills. She shared a house with a huge yard on a quiet street. I wasn't there often, but it seemed like a nice area.

Agreed! You have everything you need over there. Grocery stores etc. and whatever is not in the vicinity is easily accessible.
