This thread kind of proves exactly what the original poster was trying to point out. Pittsburgh has a bit of a problem with recognizing any sort of outside trends and basically has a "if you don't like what we do here, get out because we're right and you're wrong, we don't need you" type of deal...which is the only thing that I hate about this city. Pittsburgh really does have a great fear for modernization or change in general. Modern styles and trends just don't really fit in around here at all. And to watch people try to defend the city and claim that it has modernized, well it makes me wonder if those people have every really been to a city in the south east, south west, or the west coast for comparison.
Point in case, I'll take things away from music and nightlife trends and bring up realestate for the 20 somethings who crave modern architecture, lofts, resort style apartments, etc. Go to something like apartmentguide.com and look at apartment listing for say...Austin, compare what you can find with another city such as Charlotte, and then compare what you can find with another city such as Baltimore...then go to Pittsburgh, and ironically there isn't even anything listed, as Pittsburgh doesn't have a large selection of apartments/lofts/etc to market. Very, very odd and inexplicable for a city of this size. Now everybody here will go out of their way to defend the city's "coolness" and try to show links to Heinz Lofts and things like that in an attempt to prove me wrong, or make statements like "who wants to rent a loft when there's tons of historic homes"...but the fact of the matter is that Pittsburgh clearly doesn't have much to offer in the way of modern living trends no matter how much you do like this city. But the stubborn Pittsburgh natives will never accept that as fact, even though I'm correct in making that statement, and just tell me I'm crazy or that those other cities are just fads and will fade.
Pittsburgh as a whole IS behind the times, it's a historic city from the rust belt and lags behind in terms of style and "with-it-ness" from a national perspective. Museums and parks are great...but that's not what the twenty-something crowd is after in terms of entertainment or night life. To the original poster, there's no point in this post at all, as you're views are falling on def ears...a lot of these people responding to you are exactly the type of people that you've complained about in your post!!!!! What did you expect?!?!? And you know what? That's ok, as everybody is allowed to have their own opinions. Ironically, those stubborn people also help keep teh city more down to earth and far away from turning into a plastic city that's full of fakes. However...yes, from a 23 year old's perspective, Pittsburgh is lacking...not everybody these days wants to crowd into a bar and watch Steeler games. I know plenty of people who are bored to death with what's found in this city...and you know what? They're neither right or wrong, as everybody is different and allowed to have an opinion. I just wish people would wake up and realize that Pittsburgh is not some kind of cultural mecca with all the options. It's livable and offers great value indeed, but it could use some work and isn't perfect.
...go Buccos.

I agree..and the strange thing is that Cleveland which is a similar type city in terms of history
(rust belt) and size is LESS behind the times..A friend finally left Pittsburgh for Chicago and she LOVES
it there..Chicago is like Pittsburgh on steroids..
Pittsburgh did have lots of dance clubs in the late 70s and 80s..it was a fun city then..
Now..I have to go to Chicago and New York to have fun and I am past 40...South Beach might
be my next vacation..

Agree with that statement. Spent a week living downtown at a conference. Walked across the street to a jazz club that was packed on a Tuesday night. Took in two Cubs games, loved it. No mascot, no jumbo-tron, no pirogi races, no hot dog tosses, just good baseball. The one thing missing at PNC Park.

Were you around during the Rusty Scupper days?

exactly...and the frustrating thing about Cleveland is that it's a total dump compared to Pittsburgh. I just wish Pittsburgh would look at other cities, maybe pay attention to what Raleigh has done over the past 10 years, take a few pointers, and follow suit. Adding some brand new midrise condos and apartments around the south side, around the stadiums, and in the heart of downtown would go a long way to attracting young professionals to the area and solving the population decline. Take what's on the south side and adopt it as the official entertainment district of the city, and add to it like crazy. Build some music venues, add some lounges as opposed to dive bars, promote growth and don't look back. There's potential, but nobody is doing anything with it.
And I took a trip to Austin last spring and well...keep in mind I am a 23 year old musician and I'd have something wrong with me if a place like that didn't strike me as amazing...but yeah, I fell in love with the city from the first step I took into the airport. It was like a different world from Pittsburgh and the east coast in general, so incredibly vibrant, interesting, happy, relaxed, trendy, and fun. Simply incredible to experience. My father liked it so much that he wants to retire there, and he's as "Pittsburgh" as you can get, so it wasn't just me, haha.

I am 35 and love going to concerts. I just get very dissapointed that good shows seem to always pass over Pittsburgh.
I guess my point is the nightlife really is limited and not that great. You just have to try to make the most of what we got.

Sounds like moving on might be in your best interests guys. You have the support from me and hopefully others on this board in your quest for greener pastures. I did the same thing when I was younger. Good luck.
