For what it is worth, according to data from the Census's 2005-07 American Community Surveys, the percentage of the City of Pittsburgh population aged 20-29 is 18.5%, versus 13.8% for the U.S. as a whole. I can only do single from 20-34, but that is 12.8% for the U.S. as a whole, 19.7% for the City of Pittsburgh.

Also to me that survey sounds a little misleading because think of all the temporary residents the city has in its students. Also how was the info compiled?

I'm limited to the cross-sections available in the data I am using, so can't slice it in any way imaginable. I might also note to get these numbers I have to look up the relevant tables and do some hand calculations, so it is a bit laborious to do compilations on demand. But if it helps, here are some calculations I did before:
Quote:
The City had an estimated 28495 people with a 4-year college degree age 18-34, and 11787 people total in graduate or professional school. I couldn't find the latter figure broken down by age, so presumably the total in graduate or professional school in the 18-34 age bracket would be a bit lower. So, this is a slightly low estimate, but apparently Pittsburgh had around 16708 people 18-34 with college degrees not in graduate or professional school. That is out of an estimated total population of 286809 in this data set, so 5.83%.
For comparison purposes (using the exact same methodology), the United States as a whole had an estimated 14155056 people with a 4-year college degree 18-34, and 3451984 people total in graduate or professional school. Subject to the same caveats above, that gives the United States a total of 10703072 people 18-34 with college degrees not in graduate or professional school, out of an estimated total population of 286601838, which is 3.73%.
So, the City of Pittsburgh had a significantly higher percentage of people in this category as compared to the national average.
|
Unfortunately I don't think there is a table that provides cross-sections by age, education, and marital status at the same time. Also, although the data does have median age at first marriage for the United States, it doesn't have that data at the city level.

The calculations I just quoted above were originally intended to somewhat address this point. Again, I was trying to get people 18-34 who have graduated from college but are not in graduate or professional school, and I found a substantially higher percentage in Pittsburgh than the U.S. as a whole. Note for the reason above I can't tell you how many of these people are single, but from all the data we have it is highly likely the percentage of singles with 4-year college degrees not in grad/professional school is also substantially higher in Pittsburgh versus the U.S. as a whole.

Here is an overview of the American Community Surveys:
American Community Survey - American FactFinder
But basically, it is an annual survey of about 3 million housing units selected from every county in the nation and conducted by the Census Bureau. From the survey results, the Census Bureau calculates the various estimates I am using.
Incidentally, I'm using the 2005-07 data set, which combines three years worth of surveys and thus reduces the margin of error a bit.

Also would be better to compare against urban areas instead of US as a whole, but I guess that's nitpicking.

I don't think gyms are good places to find dates at all. Most women at the gym are at the gym to work out, not flirt, and many definitely have their guard up about being ogled and approached by the men there.

No, I think that is a fair point. I just don't know of a good way of investigating it.

If you're looking to meet someone (I'm assuming female by other posts), try volunteering. It's mostly women there and it's a good way to meet friends in general. The more friends you have, the more likely you'll run into someone interesting. Another option is special interest clubs - running, outdoors, etc.
