Default Is the American Flag in front of Heinz Field gone?

I haven't been to the city in a while, but I was talking to a friend of mine that was at Point State Park not long ago and he mentioned that the big American Flag that was in front of Heinz Field, on the old Manchester Bridge stone pier, was taken down. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, why was it taken down and when? I always thought it looked real cool there. I believe it was put up not long after 9/11. I wish it were still there. It was an awesome sight coming out of the Ft. Pitt tunnels and really stood out.

IF we are talking about the same thing... that stone pier was in scaffolding last time I passed by. Looks like it was being sandblasted. Removing the flag would be a good thing.

Well that would make sense then. I never knew they actually sandblasted that old thing. I'm sure we are talking about the same thing. It's a giant black stone pier from the old Manchester Bridge that was torn down before the Ft. Duquesne bridge was built. It looks very out of place...just a big black pier sitting on the edge of the north shore just outside of Heinz Field.

Here is a picture of the old bridge, along with the Point, for anyone interested. The other one, going over the Mon, was called the Point Bridge. Crazy how few people even know these things existed.

No, they've been cleaning it up for about a year; the pier is incorporated into a memorial to Mr Rogers.

Story from 2007; not sure if that rendition is the final design. A statue of Mister Rogers will adorn the North Shore
