Carnegie or Millvale
We are moving back to Pittsburgh and can afford $80,000 or less for a 3BR house. In our limited price range we have narrowed it down to Carnegie or Millvale. The 2 most important things to us are good schools and safety. We'd like to be able to take a walk in the evening without feeling unsafe.

Carnegie has a high rise housing project.
My vote goes to Millvale. It's a safe town. It's more convenient to downtown because you don't need to go through a tunnel. The school district is solid.

Millvale is rather old and gritty but it is safe with that old school feel to it. Carnagie is not too bad but it is somewhat depressed. My vote also goes to Millvale.

I looked at both places not too long ago because I am planning to move out of the Kansas City area pretty soon. Millvale is probably more likely to suit your taste than Carnegie though I would say that if you can't get the right property in Millvale then by all means keep Carnegie in mind. You can still find a home in a neighborhood that won't be close to the high rise.

There both rat holes but Millvale is the lesser of the two evils.

Interesting, did you have any suggestions for them or did you just want to insult 2 entire neighborhoods?

I think drtrenga was just being honest with his opinion that forced to chose between the two, he/she would go with Millvale.

If Millvale can avoid the proliferation of Section 8 housing that has already hit Carnegie, I would choose Millvale.

Sounds like I might need to expand my search area.A couple other neighborhoods in our price range are Etna and a few in Dormont. Are they any better?I'm trying to do as much research as I can before I get there and can actually look at the neighborhoods/houses.

Dormont is good area to rent, not own, the taxes are out of line, IMHO having owned property there. Etna is similar to Millvale.
