Here's the link from the CMU newspaper: The Tartan Online : Student robbed Friday, uses iPhone to catch culprits

“I checked my pockets. They didn’t take my keys so I went home. I couldn’t call 911, so I downloaded Skype on my computer and called my friend,” Duruk said.

I kind of love the fact that instead of knocking on doors and getting someone to call the police, he goes to the trouble to download Skype. Kids today.

My wife had her card stolen a couple years ago and they caught the folks using it because the Hooters they went to eat at had a security camera. The camera not only captured the thief who paid with her card, but the thief's husband and three children which were going out for a nice family meal at Hooters..
The sort of folks who go around stealing peoples cards aren't necessarily the classiest folk..

This is so totally not common for Pittsburgh. I only recall it happening near Christmas. I guess the economy is really taking it's toll.
Good areas of town becoming dangerous isn't going to help local businesses.
I hope the ones who were caught via the cell phone gps are the ones responsible for most of this. Doubtful though.

I think it's brilliant.
The kid knew their location before the police even got to his house.
If he had left it all to the police, they would still be looking for the culprits.
There's probably a backlog for getting the 'tech guru' in the police department to track gps systems for low priority cases!
