Default Any Floridians in Pittsburgh?

I am buying a second home in Pittsburgh, to live in the summer/fall. I will live ther more when possible. Closing this month. Just curious to hear from any other folks from Florida who may already be there, and hear of the contrasts. I'm coming from metro SE Florida, a native. I have always wanted to live in the North East. Pittsburgh haters: don't bother. And please, no cliche questions like "Why on earth would anyone move from Florida to Pittsburgh?" Florida is not as great as many assume - However Pittsburgh is much greater than many assume!

I have LOTS of family from Florida here in Pittsburgh (and vice versa). My whole clan, so to speak, which consists of several generations back of MANY siblings each having MANY children. So we are quite a large family. I have many relatives that still live in Vero Beach, Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater. Many have come back to Pittsburgh and many still live down there. Most, however, are in Pittsburgh for the entire year except winter. For the winter, like birds, they migrate south and most of these ones are retired.

What months do your "snowbird" relatives leave Pittsburgh?

AND of course, any other Pittsburgh Immigrants are welcome to share their experiences too.

Well they love Pittsburgh fall and spring but are also up here for summer. I would say most leave after Thanksgiving and return in March.

LOL, that's what I got asked constantly when I started meeting people up here and told them where I was from ( I moved from Orlando to PGH last fall). Many Pittsburghers that grew up here have no idea what a great area this really is. Florida is the most overrated state in the country. The weather is BRUTAL, the heat and humidity is basically unbearable down there from April to October. Cost of living has gotten out of control. Salaries still lag behind the rest of the country for the most part. Then there's overcrowding and crime.

Anyway, I'm very happy with my move to Pittsburgh. It's about as DIFFERENT from Florida as you can get, and that's what I love about it. I love having four seasons, I got to enjoy my first snowfall since I was 13. I'm renting a large apartment in a decent area for only $520 a month. The same apartment in Orlando would be about $950 a month. I love the relaxed atmosphere and old-fashioned feel this city has. I was accepted by my neighbors and coworkers from day 1, even though I'm an "outsider." This city has the friendliest people I've ever met. It's a pleasant relief from the stressful Florida lifestyle.

Mugatu, I couldn't agree more with EVERYTHING you say. I am so excited to be moving to Pittsburgh this summer! I got a beautiful brick, restored Victorian home for 1/3rd what it would be in South Florida (except they dont have Victorian), with so much more to do and to see than where I'm coming from.

More Floridians need to know about Pittsburgh, as they have already filled up North Carolina in their effort to escape from Florida.
