I thought this might be fun. Go through the neighborhoods/ suburbs of Pittsburgh you are familiar with and describe your perceptions of each in one word. I'll go first.
Chalfant: quiet
Forest Hills: sleepy
Braddock: blight
Lincoln-Lemington: Abandoned
East Allegheny: potential
Manchester: hope
Spring Hill: forgotten
Spring Garden: weeds
Downtown: Impressive
Strip: gritty
South Side: edgy
Mexican War Streets/ Deutschtown: Victorian
Shadyside: rentals
Oakland: students
Squirrel Hill: yuppies
Highland Park: grand
Regent Square: vintage
Morningside: rebound
Hill District: scary
Wilkinsburg: checks cashed (okay I cheated on this one lol)
East Liberty: renewal
Point Breeze: faded
Mckeesport: depressed
Bloomfield: lively
Lawrenceville: renaissance
Bluff: crumbling
Allentown: poverty
Millvale: cobblestone

Lawrenceville=quirky
Shadyside=snobby on Walnut and funky on Ellsworth
East Liberty=diverse(ditto Highland Park)
South Side=cool by day and crazy by night
North Shore=sports
Bloomfield=secret(although that has been changing)
Oakland=culture
Strip=underdeveloped
Regent Square=quaint
Squirrel Hill=yummy!

What about completing this picture and adding in descriptors for the inner ring suburbs? Places like Dormont, Bellevue, Ben Avon, or Munhall? Just a thought.

I like Downtown--it does indeed have excellent architecture, is very pretty from nearby views (in fact Pittsburgh always seems to make lists of top skylines), and it is very compact and walkable. And it is heading in the right direction as far as becoming a more interesting residential area--it is just going to take some time.
By the way, it seems to me like you can't walk out of your house in Regent Square anymore without tripping over someone pushing a baby carriage.
