Default Apartment Hunt

Help! I need a 2 BR, 2 bath apartment for a reasonable rate (under $850/mo) in a great school district. Looked online in Fox Chapel school district, but couldn't find any apartment complexes except one very expensive one. I'm mainly considering the North Hills area by Ross Park Mall, but would go farther north (Cranberry, Butler) if the daily commute would be OK. Will be traveling to the Strip District every day (around 27th and Penn). It's hard to tell online what complexes are safe and well maintained. Can anyone give me some apartment complexes that are in the Hampton, North Allegheny, Fox Chapel, or Seneca Valley school systems? Actually, our first choice would be the Shadyside area, but we have been told to stay away from the public schools there. Anyone know anything about middle schools in the Shadyside area? or the CAPA school?

If you want Fox Chapel School District, try finding an apartment or duplex in O'Hara Township, Indiana Township or Aspinwall. All of these areas are part of the Fox Chapel School District, and many have more reasonable housing compared to Fox Chapel Borough. (I think you'd want to stay away from Sharpsburgh which is also part of Fox Chapel schools.)

Why do you want an apartment complex as opposed to a duplex, house or privately owned rental property?

There are some great complexes in McCandlass Township near North Park. But I'll wait to hear why you're most interested in an apartment complex before I continue.

Default apartment

This move may be somewhat temporary--I prefer something quite small, no stairs and will be renting furniture rather than move furniture from our current home. I am coming to Pittsburgh to take advantage of a training opportunity for my middle-school child--not sure if it will work out being away from the rest of the family next school year, so I don't want to sign a long lease or move much "stuff." We will be commuting to IN most weekends and are essentially using the apartment as a hotel during the week!

I'm not sure if Presidential Arms is in McCandlass Township or Ross Township, but it's a nice safe apartment community nessled in the woods right next to North Park. It's so close to North Park that it might very well be in North Park. A two bedroom ranges $655 to $725 per month. The Ross Park Mall is 10 minutes away.

Here's a link to the site: http://www.depaulmanagementcompany.c...s/overview.htm McCandlass Township would be North Allegheny School District. Ross Township would be North Hills School District. Give them a call to see which school district the apartments are located.

The Ochard Hills apartment complex is in Gibsonia. I believe the school district would be Pine/Richland. It doesn't have a pool and tennis courts like the one above. But it's conveniently located to Route 8 and the Turnpike. It's a much smaller apartment complex so your son might not have as much as an opportunity to make friends. A two bedroom is $715/month. Here's the link: http://www.rent.com/rentals/pennsylv...bsonia/489701/ This complex isn't fancy by a long shot, but it's in a nice township and it's safe.

There's a very nice complex across from LaRoche College called The Club. The lowest rent for a 2 bedroom is $970/month at The Club. Here's a link: http://www.apartments.com/summary.as...d=More_Details I think this is North Hills School District, but it very well might be in McCandlass which would make it North Allegheny School District. This is a much more upscale apartment complex compared to the other two.

All three apartment complex communites listed above are safe areas. The school districts are all safe (even when I'm not sure which school district it's actually located). North Hills, North Allegheny and Pine/Richland are all good school districts in Allegheny County.

If you have your heart set on a specific school district----just one----let me know and I'll track down some complexes for you.

But the ones above are all convenient to Ross Park Mall and a 20 minute drive to the Strip District. And all of them are within 2 to 10 minutes of the turnpike.

As far as amenities and property, I'll rank the above properties as follows:

1) The Club----Better (the most community amenities--- http://www.apartments.com/cvcommunit...ea2=y&prvpg=43)
2) Presidential Arms----Moderate (pool and tennis courts)
3) Ochard Hills----Modest (no community amenities)

There are many apartment complexes in the immediate vacinity of Ross Park Mall and McKnight Road. All are safe. If you want more apartment complexes in that area, I can get the names of them for you. I personally like the location of Presidential Arms because it's right next to North Park. My next favorite location is The Club.

I only offered you Ochard Hills because it's another alternative within your price range. Ochard Hills is a tiny apartment complex in the woods right next to the highway. There are some stores around it----and the Pine/Richland community center is within walking distance (it's a cool place for kids), but I'm not sure Orchard Hills is what you're looking for. I suggest you check it out though---if they have openings.

Thanks for the info. I am a little familiar with the Ross Park Mall area and am comfortable with the schools there. That area is high on my list. Do you know of anything besides The Docks that feeds into Fox Chapel? I am also comfortable with the Aspinwall area and the proximity of grocery, shopping and Panera! I would prefer not to go above $850 since with furniture rental and utilities I will be around $1100 or above.

The Presidential Arms Apartments are just 5 minutes away from McKnight Road (Ross Park Mall area). I'll be heading over to McKnight within the next couple of days, and I'll get the names of other apartment communities right off McKnight.

As for Fox Chapel, call Fox Chapel Real Estate. I'm sure they'll be able to help you. They have quite a few apartment listings on Craig's List in Aspinwall that are extremely affordable. The might be able to help you get a short term lease.

There is a small apartment complex on Guys Run Road in Indianola that feeds into Fox Chapel School District. It's across the street from the PPG facility.

I found the following apartment complexes that might feed into Fox Chapel School District:

---O'Hara Woods Apartments (O'Hara)
---Fox Chapel Mews Assn
---River Oaks Apartments (Aspinwall)

I live in the area so I'll keep my eyes open while I'm driving around over the next few days.

Here's a link to the River Oaks website: http://www.west-riveroaks.com/floor.html

A 2 bedroom, 1 bath townhouse is $850/month.
A 2 bedroom, 1-1/2 bath townhouse is $950/month.

The only thing available is a 2 bedroom, 1-1/2 bath.

You might want to jump on that unless you want to find something significantly cheaper like Presidential Arms.

Wow...would anyone info like this for Mt. Leb or Bethel Park? I would prefer to rent a a home over a townhome or apt but the right one would be ok too...I have some time before I have to move, so i can wait for something nice..I need at least 1500 sq feet with a full basement and hopefully a two car garage as well, any links would be great...I can spend up to 2000 for a rental, but no more..thanks!

Honestly, I'm getting a little irritated about your negativity regarding Sharpsburg. I'd suggest learning how to actually spell its name before you pass on your narrow-minded judgments. It's a great little town right over the bridge from one of the most up-and-coming neighborhoods in Pittsburgh. It is extraordinarily safe, clean and (as you pointed out) part of Fox Chapel School District. The people are hard-working and care about the neighborhood. Not only do you have great access to downtown and other quality areas, but Sharpsburg actually has character (which is lacking in much of the swanker areas in Fox Chapel). Sure... there is the occasional bad apple, but we've been living here for five years and I haven't heard of a single incident of serious crime. The best part of it is the great deals on housing you can find here (rental and for sale).
