I live in Oakland - I was near campus earlier tonight. Both students and police were gathering in large numbers. The university's "text message emergence alert" program has sent two texts to students today.
The first, sent at 7:29 pm read "G20 disturbances may continute tonight. Be careful. exercise good judgement. Safety Tips at my.pitt.edu."
The second, sent at 10:07 pm reads "Conditions may be deteriorating in Oakland. Students are advised to remain near their residences."
I have a feeling these alerts may have only encouraged the students who were ready to riot. Updates on twitter indicate that police may be planning to search the Towers, the largest student housing area.
Why, oh way, can't my fellow students just be civil?

Because they're sheep who are doing the bidding of the sham "anarchists" and don't even realize it.

I disagree with the cheerleaders who think the G20 is good for the city. Why not cut taxes and put the interests of small businesses first? That would be far more helpful than having hippies on national tv for two days.

Ya, just got done with all of that. Had to park my car and run with a group of kids while cops in riot gear threw tear gas ahead of them every 30 seconds or so while marching down 5th. Fun stuff.

True, but I think what the journalists have to say about our city outshines the actions of the protestors, to be honest. I heard on the news that many of the global journalists say that Pittsburgh is a beautful city and thier preconcieved notions about it being smoky had went out the window. That's a big plus.

The city hasn't been smokey for over 20 years and the county still constantly ranks in the top 10 worst for air pollution.

As for us being looked at as the "Portland of the East"... the jury is out.

Being very familiar with "Portland of the West" (having lived in Seattle for half a decade), I narrowed my choice of new hometown down to Portland and Pittsburgh and found them very comparable in some ways. Pittsburgh is way more urban and has quite a bit more charm. Portland has better public transit. Portland has Powell's books, but Pittsburgh has Jerry's records. It came down to affordability, proximity to family and lack of that awful Northwest smugness and in those areas Pittsburgh wins hands down.
I know what you're talking about, though. It wouldn't be a bad thing to get the reputation as "Portland of the East" (although there's already one of those ), but I would never want to see Pittsburgh get overrun with smugness, either. Pittsburgh's employment situation is far better, too.

The county averages are deceiving. We have a particular problem that is largely localized in the Clairton area, but it is severe enough to throw off the numbers for the entire county. And US Steel is investing many millions in addressing that problem.
