Default Upper St. Clair vs. South Side

I currently live in the cranberry area with my mother and commute every morning to bridgeville for work.

I want to move to either Upper St. Clair or the South Side. I would be purchasing a home in either place.

I know they are wildly different areas. My reason for living in Upper St. Clair would be the close proximity to where I work and the great re-sale for my house. The downside is that there aren't many people in my demographic (24, single, male) in that area, which is the reason for my next consideration of the south side. Everyone down there is in my demographic but the commute is the downside as I have to go through the tunnels.

What I am asking of you, is for you personally, what would your upsides/down sides be to living in upper st. clair vs. living in the south side.

Thanks.

Southside has the age demographic for both you AND your mother. Plus, your house will still sell in Southside.

It might be possible that houses are currently overpriced in Upper St. Clair and you'll need to live there for 30 years to get a decent return.

I say move to Southside and forget about resale since you won't lose money on a Southside house if you pay a fair price.

I'd pick USC, you can always drive to the South Side or take the T. I'd rather have the quick commute to work. Plus, very few people urinate on the sidewalks in USC.

Personally, I would much prefer living on the South Side, particularly back when I was a 24yo single male. You'd be doing a reverse commute to Bridgeville, so I wouldn't view that as a huge problem. As for resale, I think that is a wash in this case (just pay fair market value).

Assuming you still like to hit the bars and stagger home, then the Southside. If not then I would go for Upper St. Clair or another suburb. You may want to look at Mt. Lebanon because there are some younger single people and they do have a couple of bars there. One is called the Saloon or something like that, the other is an Irish Bar. When I was younger I didn't have to live in the middle of the action (Southside) but I needed at least one bar within walking distance which is why I like living in Shadyside, Sq. Hill and Aspinwall and not Point Breeze.

I'm not worried about the long term cost implications.....I would agree that the homes in upper st. clair are a bit overpriced, but I think that has to do with the fact that it is one of the more desirable suburbs to live in, in the pittsburgh area.

Very true about the commute...That is something that I would really really like to have, but the downside is that many of my social counterparts in USC are going to be 35+ more than likely. I am not ruling out finding a mid 20's crowd but I think the odds are against me in that regard.

Also something else I forgot to mention is that if I move to the south side I would have to sell my other car because if I came outside and saw a mirror missing or some type of other cosmetic damage I may have a heart attack.

I definitley won't have pee on my sidewalks, which I won't miss at all.

Bottom line to me when choosing where to live: Close to work.

Long commutes to me are a waste of time that you will NEVER get back.
I have a home office now and it would kill me to have to travel to an office.

Who cares if your counterparts are +35, hell, they may have a great looking younger sister. I never looked at a place to live matching my age, who cares, I was never there in my 20's. Either working, working out, or hitting the singles scene. 8 hours a day is all I spent at my apt/home in my 20's. SLEEPING

I forgot to think about that but your right. When other's are commuting into the city I would be leaving the city which wouldn't be nearly as bad. Living on the south side would be an expierence no doubt and I'm sure I would meet many really great people.

I think there is always going to be a demand to live in the south side because there will always be pitt and duquesne students as well as being littered with bars in a very densely populated area which always attracts young professionals as well.

If you're set to live in the Southside, make sure you have a protected parking spot. And by that I mean a garage.
