Barnes & Noble to close Squirrel Hill store
it was always busy, but how many people were buying books, not just sitting around reading? i used to hang out up there during a long bus transfer and i must confess barely ever bought anything. and i don't remember waiting in long lines when i did.
a lady in my office says the panera had to close because they instituted some corporate policy that all paneras must have a parking lot.

What are 'paneras'? Whatever it is, if they are requiring parking lots, that's messed up.

You've never heard of Panera? Oh, I see, you're in Japan. See here Panera Bread › Home. Actually, it doesn't sound like that is the case - they have lost their lease according to another poster. I must ask my daughter - she works for them (although not in this area).

Not buying it. Too many storefront Paneras around here to be plausible. It's possible though that the SQHill location was just too dense for car traffic but not dense enough for sufficient foot traffic.

Boston Market as a whole has been struggling for the last few years. I think they even went through a bankruptcy.

Not surprising -- they're Boston-based. They're quite a popular institution around here too. Can't hardly throw a rock without hitting one. Donuts... meh. Coffee... yum. Plus many of 'em here have a Baskin Robbins attached. Yay.

This is true, they're having problems nationally.

Oooh, just did some wikipedia readin' on Boston Market... wonder if their downhill slide happens to coincide with their purchase by McDonald's...
...that said, McDonald's was an excellent steward of Chipotle during their ownership of same.

Indeed, Chipotle really took off after McDonald's acquired them. McDonald's, with Boston Market being an already established chain, may have been the problem. They immediately closed the one near me when they acquired them, even though it was a popular fast food restaurant, and I'm almost certain a money-maker, in my neck of the woods.

They may have closed it with the intention to re-open it as a McDonald's. Accoring to the wikipedia article (which of course means "believe or disbelieve at your own risk") McDonald's initially bought the chain for its real estate assets, not because they were interested in owning the chain, but then made money on the chain anyway so they kept it for a while.

That's what happened at the corner of Route 8 and Wildwood Road.
(My family stopped eating Boston Market in the early 90s...)
