Seeking Alternate Route - Beaver to UPMC Shadyside Hospital
I am new to the Pittsburgh area and am looking for an alternate route to get from Beaver (Brighton Twp) to UPMC Shadyside Hospital during rush hour. I currently take Rt 60 to I-279 and it takes approx 1.5 hours.
Suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Why did you chose to live in Beaver if you would be working at Shadyside Hospital?
Have you tried taking side roads through the North Hills?

I'm not sure what you mean by 60 to 279. Also are there any parts of your trip that is worse than others?

Route 60 is out near the Robinson/Airport area, it runs north and south up in to the New Castle/Hermitage area.
To the original poster, there really isn't much to do to get around it. I'm not sure why you chose to live so far away from the hospital. There's no way I'd sit in that traffic every day.

Why are you questioning her living far away? She isn't complaining or knocking pittsburgh's road system in anyway. Maybe she just got hired in at UPMC Shadyside.
First off, the section of I-279 you are currently using is actually now I-376 ( Roads unite to form new Interstate 376). It seems a little strange to me to go so far south of the city just to come back in. Have you considered taking Rt. 65 to Rt 28 and coming across the river at the 31st or 40th street bridges? Yahoo maps shows it as 3 miles less and it will let you avoid the Ft. Pitt Tunnel traffic.

What do all of you think about taking the turnpike to Rt. 28 to Highland Park Bridge?

You have a couple of options that you can try, depending upon the shift that you work.
You could take 60 to Business 60 (Moon) and University Boulevard down to 51, the cross the Sewickley Bridge and down 65.
You could take 60 to I-79 North, then get off at exit 66 and pick up 65, there.
You could take whatever is the quickest route to Rochester and pick up 65, there.
From 65 you can either cross the river on the North Shore (if the traffic isn't bad), and take 10th street bypass to either 10th Street, get onto Grant and take Bigelow Boulevard to Baum Boulevard or 11th Street to Liberty Avenue to Shadyside.
If the bridge is backed up stay on 65 (aka the "65th Infantry Division Highway" up to where it merges with 279 North), as you merge, get over into the right hand lane quickly (this can be a challenge), and off at the first exit, cross over to the right, again, and exit the next exit to Chestnut/16th Street. Cross the river and take Liberty to Shadyside or Grant then follow the above.
You may vary your route based upon your own experience but it beats sitting in tunnel traffic.
Oh, and why you live out in Beaver and work in Shadyside is your business. In this economy, we live and work where we must. And besides, parts of Beaver County are quite beautiful.

I would avoid 28 at all costs. Traffic, except or weekends or in the late evenings/early mornings, is terrible, especially at the two intersections that you mention (Highland Park may not be bad, however).
You could take the turpike to I-79, then down to 279 exiting at 6th the Bigelow Boulevard. Or, you could take it to Rt 8 South, if you don't mind a nerve wracking drive, follow 8 across the Highland Park Bridge.

The route the OP is taking is the one that mapquest recommends. I think the side roads in the North Hills would be much quicker.

I'm not knocking her. I'm asking a question.
She's new to Pittsburgh so that means she chose Beaver very recently for a reason.
I'd like to know the reason. It's up to her to answer the question or not.
