I never claimed their goal was to lose money. If people were going just to win money then they wouldn't be playing slots, you have to admit there is an entertainment factor at hand here.
Why People Gamble in Casinos
There is a link to a site with some quotes from frequent gamblers that may give you some insight. I think this one is the most telling.

Almost all had apportioned a certain amount of their income for purposes of gambling. It was their preferred form of recreation.

Detroit has 3, not that Detroit is a shining example of a city.

I assumed those were in Windsor. I was wrong. I wonder how well they perform. They look pretty successful.

I have a friend who goes to the one near the Meadows with the sole purpose of winning. There's a specific game there that requires some degree of skill. She's good at it. She always wins money, not a huge amount of money, but a few hundred dollars every trip. It's helped her family get through the recession since her husband is under employed. When times are good financially, she doesnt' go. That validates that entertainment isn't a factor in her trips to the casino.

You know that's a fact when the new Macy's TV commercial is touting Macy's as a discount clothing store! Have you seen that commercial?

Other than horse racing I don't know of any game that legitimately involves skill, rather than just an illusion of it. Do you know what she's playing? Every machine is going to have a house edge. If this game that involves skill actually exists then I buy your argument that your friend is not playing for entertainment.

I wonder as well. I've been to them occassionally, however they aren't necessarily convenient as few people who have any spending money whatsoever are living in Detroit. I am guessing since Detroit has pretty much nothing to do except go to big events (sports, concerts, etc.); people must tie the two in together. The casinos are near "GREEKTOWN" which is basically a block of restaurants where pretty much every tourist in Detroit eats - as there is so few other choices, PLUS those restaurants are REALLY good. So, the entire experience is kind of a 'thing' to do in Detroit.
As I grew up in Michigan, we also are near the casinos in Canada as well as 4-5 indian reservations with the same types of things. So for the most part, most Michiganders do the other choices. So, in short, seems like the Detroit casinos can't be attracting diehard regular clientele day in and day, must be just based on whatever people are doing business or have to be in Detroit for whatever reason and in and around their hotels. Just a guess.
