Excellent! You couldn't ask for a better event to aid in our rebranding as a cutting-edge green city.

Edit: a few links:

http://www.unep.org/wed/2009/english/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Environment_Day

The latter contains a list of former host cities.

An expanded Reuters article, including this bit:

http://www.reuters.com/article/press...009+BW20091015

Quote:
"With the help of Bayer, one of UNEP`s most important global and regional World
Environment Day partners, we are proud and pleased to spotlight Pittsburgh`s
remarkable environmental and sustainability progress, particularly in the areas
of biodiversity, green jobs and workforce development, and environmental
education," said Amy Fraenkel, Director, UNEP RONA.

"In terms of sustainability, Pittsburgh has come so far, whether it`s in
innovation and research, environmental education or sustainable business
practices," said Greg Babe, President and CEO, Bayer Corporation. "As the North
American host city for World Environment Day, the Pittsburgh region and the
companies that call it home have a unique opportunity to showcase our progress
and enhance the ongoing dialogue about this important topic."
It also includes the obligatory statements from Onorato and Ravenstahl.

Wow! It seems like the good press from G-20 may have put the burgh on the map.

I was actually planning on attending the Ecological Society of America meeting in Pittsburgh in August, but maybe I will see if there is a way to participate in this. I am currently trying to increase international conservation and outreach efforts in the National Park Service, where I now work.

Thanks for posting the link Brian!

Nah. Greenpeace just called them up and told them how cool the point looks while dangling from the West End Bridge.

Well let's hope by June the G-20 "shine" won't have worn off of the city just yet.

Speaking of something ugly, anyone else think that this 40 degrees and rain crap in mid-October is miserable or what?

It sure seems like it, doesn't it? Not knocking rain (one couldn't stand living in da' burgh if you can't take rain), but I am knocking cold rain.

I'm one that loves Fall and Winter, but I'd rather it snow than this junk we're getting right now. Oh, how I wish I lived just 30 to 45 minutes east in the Alleghenies! 4-12" overnight.

But, back on topic, that's pretty cool news.
