The Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation recently restored these buildings near Market Square across from the new Three PNC, featuring retail and several pretty swank apartments. Here is a link that includes some cool pictures of the site from several different eras down at the bottom:

You can really see the whole story of Downtown over the last century being told in those pictures.

I actually got to attend a PHLF open house for the newly-renovated apartments on that block. I was very impressed by the whole setup there. The open verandas of some of the housing there and the feeling of being tight-knit in the downtown scene gave me a feeling like it was Pittsburgh's equivalent of Greenwich Village, what with the immediate mixed-use area and then the skyscrapers a little further beyond the area.

Admittedly, there of course is that brand new office high-rise across the street on Fifth, but I was thoroughly impressed overall by the the entire rehabilitation project centered around Market Square.

Wow, the Hare Krishna sign is the era I remember. I used to hang out downtown in my Earth Shoes back then. Trivia: I also remember those trash cans from the 70s. Written on them was "For Pete's Sake Keep It Clean." Pete Flaherty was mayor at the time.
