We grew up in the Monroeville area, now live near Detroit, and are semi-retired. We want to move back near family in Western PA. We've been gone so long we don't know where to go, we're not as familiar with the Pittsburgh area as we were in the '70's. The hometown (Pitcairn) has really gone downhill, there is no homestead to return to, it will be like starting over for us. A family member suggested Washington County. We are looking for lower crime, quiet, affordable, and fewer trouble-makers. No more city life for us !!! We would be open to renting for awhile,or buying a mobile home in a quiet community. Do you agree that Washington County would be the "nicest" Pittsburgh area to head to? Thanks for any replies.

We just moved back after 20+ yrs away. We settled on Mars, Butler County. It has the best access to the city via routes 279 & 19. You also have a lower tax situation in Butler vs Allegheny County, yet we are only a stones throw over the Allegheny County line.

Washington and Greene counties are pretty nice and affordable, another nice area would be Westmoreland County. I believe Butler has higher taxes than those counties mentioned but not as high as Allegheny.

Washington County isn't necessarily the nicest surrounding county. Since you can live anywhere, check out Westmoreland County. The landscape is more beautiful there.

West of the city in Robinson Township and Moon Township are nice family areas that offer different types of housing, plenty of shopping, access to highways and low key living. Both areas are developing but not to excess like Peters in Washington county or Cranberry to the north.
