Oh, the photos on Page 2...if those are the 'Pittsburgh Box', I LIKE THOSE! Especially all of the housing in SS Slopes and Flats!!!

The one on Page 1...I'm not too crazy about that style...what do Pittsburghers' call those? However, the Page 1 one does looks much sturdier.

Smaller Foursquares can be asymmetric in that on the first floor they have two larger rooms (living and dining) and then two smaller spaces (foyer and kitchen). On the second floor this might translate into two larger bedrooms and then two smaller bedrooms. But there should in fact be two sides to the interior spaces, even if one side is smaller.

My mom and dad had me way out past Burgettstown (they used to live there when they were young) and showed me what they said were box houses. Little tiny boxes that housed families working in a factory nearby. This is sort of one--updated with a porch it looks like. I couldn't get closer to the ones we drove by as there's no google-view there. See the one on the right: burgettstown, pa - Google Maps

Sorry, just noticed this.

So that is three houses on what were originally two lots, a not uncommon arrangement in Regent Square. Sometimes there are only two houses on the two lots, which leads to a little more separation, and a few of the nicest homes are on two full lots by themselves, but conversely there are a number of small apartment buildings scattered around which moves the density back up.

By the way, Regent Square, like many Pittsburgh neighborhoods, is a former streetcar suburb, and this density remains consistent with supporting good public transit for at least commuting purposes. It also makes for pleasant walks and we are supporting a small but thriving commercial area. So certainly from my perspective the density is at least within the ideal range, although I understand that some people would prefer either Manhattan or a rural setting or so on.

Speaking of lot sizes in Regent Square, I know someone whose neighbor's property line goes right through the middle of their dining room.
