From the link: If all goes according to plan, the store should open in June 2011.

This is great news for the east end. East Liberty is really shaping up as a shopping destination. And the stores they are building are designed for an urban environment without the acres of asphalt parking. Bakery Square is coming along and will open soon, so that and Target will anchor the eastern portion, and Whole Foods anchors the western side.

It've been hearing about this almost since I moved to Pittsburgh two years ago - I thought it would be done by now!

The planning has been a long process. There was a 20-story apartment building on the site and the tenants had to be moved out, and that took a while. Then I think the land had to be transferred and all the legal paperwork and negotiations took a while. Also, the street system has to be modified a bit for better access. These things take a while.

Now THAT is one project that has been taking FOREVER to complete.. ...and they didn't have to even start that from SCRATCH. The building was already there in place....

It's kind of the nature of urban reclamation. The building was a Nabisco factory that had to essentially be reconfigured as a shopping center/hotel/office complex. They had to tear part of it down, clean up any environmental hazzards, and take it down to the shell of what was left. Those buildings were built to last several hundred years and it shows. Then they built the new buildings and parking garage within the footprint of the existing footprint. It really was a massive job. I have to credit the developers. Starting from scratch is easier and faster. They couold have just found some patch of green space, cut down the trees, plowed everything over and thrown up a cinder block shopping center with faux roof peaks and fake second floors. Bakery Quare is high quality renewal.

I have a friend, who is doing some electrical work on the Bakery Square project. Even he told me that the DEVELOPERS, themselves, are ready for this thing to open and are paying big money to get this project done ASAP. They're willing to pay the workers (construction, electrical engineers, etc...) around the clock, if necessary.
