This is predominately tourist-oriented, or to commuters use it to get downtown?

Are there certain hours it is operation?

The Monongahela Incline is run by PAT, the Duquesne Incline is independently operated, yet both run on the PAT schedule, roughly 5am to 1am. Both are still used by city residents, and tourists alike, to commute and go party down on The South Side.

The Duquesne Incline continues to be hurt by the lack of anything at it's bottom. People ride it just for the ride, but it's useless for commuters because there is nothing around the bottom station.

Busses traveling Carson St stop there, so residents do use it to get down the hill and catch a bus to downtown.

Can you also walk across the bridge to downtown, from the bottom of the hill?

I used to live on Grandview and would from time to time take the Duquesne Incline down the hill side. I wasn't always alone. At the bottom there is a bus stop (or it was) and there was a light bulb to light up to alert a passing bus to stop. One could not or should not stand too close to the traffic on Carson St there, it's way too close. Included with the fare was a CT to use on the short ride into town.

I never ever saw anyone walk from the Duquesne Incline into town during the rush hour commute. That can not be said about the Mon Incline, as it's convenient to the Smithfield St Bridge.

Yes, but it's much easier, and a shorter walk, from the Mon Incline. As Hero said, there's not much at the bottom of the Duquesne Incline, and it's kind of out-of-the way.

That brings me to another point. There is a decent amount of property on the western side of Station Square down to the Fort Pitt Bridge and in the vicinity of the Duquesne Incline. This would be a prime area for residential, with spectacular views of the skyline and rivers. This would also help with Duquesne Incline ridership, or I would be so inclined to think.

While I agree with you, there's also some industrial/heavy commercial occupancies in that area, so it may all be zoned that. Plus, there's a major interstate/bridge running nearby, plus the west end busway. I think all of that would make it very difficult to put in residences and light and retail commercial to make it a more livable area.
