Not random at all! You're in the right city, Pghpanthers2. Believe it or not, there is a whole culture/subset of people who are into model rocketry. (There's another subset into robots and another subset into model airplanes.)
TRIPOLI PITTSBURGH::One of the oldest model rocket clubs around. This weekend - May 19-20 - they are having a launch. It gives details on their website. Anyone can launch their rockets on Saturday (For a fee, which might not be what you're looking for.) It's fun to watch them launch. There's also a "Contact List" on their website. These guys might give you info about where you can launch close to Pitt.
PITTSBURGH SPACE COMMAND::Another model rocket club
Here's a Pittsburgh Trib article:
Everyone has a Blast at Rocket Launch
A VERY Cool Picture from a model rocket launch with high school students at Point State Park
Pittsburgh Area Students Launch Model Rocket for NASA April 24, 2007 Yeah. For NASA. Doggone smart kids and smart Pittsburgh engineers.
Hope this helps. Good luck! Have a blast.
