I am going to be in Pittsburgh over the weekend. Is the Strip District a fun place to visit during the winter or is it more of a seasonal attraction?
Also...
I read that Downtown Pittsburgh has holiday lights/ice skating? Is that something you would recommend visiting? I will be going with my girlfriend who is very much into Christmas lights/decor.

Thanks!

the strip is still fun in the winter, just bundle up!

there is ice skating and the wintergarden at ppg place, and macy's (formerly kauffmann's) window displays. and the giant creche in steel plaza. you could probably spent the good part of a day checking out the strip and the holiday stuff downtown.

The strip is busiest Saturday mornings.

I found the attached when I was looking for hours for the rink recently. It lists a lot of holiday exhibits, etc. A lot of the events were for Light-Up Night and the day of the parade, but there is information about places having holiday music and exhibits/decorations throughout the season that might give you some ideas of places to visit. And it does have the rink hours information as well.

Just a personal note, but I quite like PPG Place during the holidays--it has a sort of surreal ice-castle vibe to it. The creche at USX is really quite impressive (for its scale if nothing else). Finally, the free trolley and carriage rides in the brochure Tinare linked seem like a great deal to me.

Here's more rink info with costs as well --

PPG Place: The Rink at PPG Place

And I agree about the free carrigage rides and trolley -- which sounded like a great thing to me too for when your feet get tired.
