Just a little joke there...Ive read many posts about relocating to Pittsburgh and am adding one more.

I am a single mom with a middle school aged son.

Of course I am looking for safe, and family friendly.
So far I have Mt. Lebanon, and Oakmont on my list.

Specifics are...I would like a school that has great support for AD/HD/Aspergers children. That is the number one for me right now..

The perfect area would be, walkable, parks nearby, pool for the summer, libraries and shopping. (any major shopping I do not mind driving out for)
We also have pets..two dogs, so a yard would be great.

Right now I am looking at rentals until we get a feel for the area..and then buy when we save up enough. my rent budget is up to 850, of course lower is better!

We were supposed to come out for the summer but that fell through, but we are still looking at moving to the Pittsburgh area.
I am a very easygoing type of person..likes to read, and explore new places.

Thanks for all the help!!

I don't know much about the schools and the support for AD/HD/Aspergers kids, but Mt. Lebanon sounds like a good place to start. I live in Robinson and it's very family oriented here. We have a wonderful local library that was new only a few years ago. We have two community pools, one in Clever park and one at the high school. There is tons of shopping here and a new shopping complex just opened up off of Campbell's Run/Parkway West last month. I would not recommend walking to any of these places, but most everything is located in one area so it's easy to get everything done quickly if you drive.

My son used to have autism and had wraparound services, speech therapy, and other programs outside of the school. The state paid for almost everything and he received wonderful care. I know there are many services that will go into the school with your child so you might want to explore an agency with wraparound if you do not find a school that has a good program. If you want to send me a PM, I can give you the name of the place we received our services.

I can't say too much about renting in this area, but since there are homes that are ranch style older homes, they may rent for a decent price. You might want to look into some of those rental guides either on line or if you are local pick one up at a store.

My husband and I are thinking of moving to Pittsburgh as well. We have very similar criteria to you and found Mt. Lebanon to be our top choice. Although I don't know how well the school district handles AD/HD/Aspergers children - you could probably contact them and find out what their program entails.

FYI - my sister and her family live there and rent half of a duplex - I think their monthly rent is within your price range.

North Allegheny is has great support of Aspergers children. I know a teacher who works at a different district, but moved to live in North Allegheny just so her Aspergers son could go to school at North Allegheny. That speaks volumns about the quality of the special education program at North Alleghen for children with autism disorders.
