I think some areas were hit with more ice early in the storm. There's two to three inces of ice under the snow where I live.

Plus, any roads that were plowed early enough yesterday had the benefit of the sunshine to melt anything that remained.

I just drove to the convenience store. Our main two lane road is in good condition. There are lots of power lines are down laying across the middle of it though.

Greg, Route 19 might be in better shape by the time you get there. My husband went through there at 5:00am this morning.

Forgot to mention that my sister still doesn't have electricity (and therefore heat).

I'm glad my apt complex is such a priority apparently, but something just doesn't add up when other areas are still impassable.
It's possible that someone in your neighborhood works for PENNDOT. Afterall, PENNDOT doesn't do apartment complexes. There's a unique reason yours is being done.

IMO, the mismanagement is in the fact that areas like your apartment complex were cleared before main roads.

I don't know what the deal is in this complex. PENNDOT does clear the main road into the complex, I've seen their orange trucks come through before, but we have a private company that does the parking lots. So the parking lots are a mess, and the beat up old truck they use to plow was struggling. But the road into the complex is perfect. And it's not a through street, it's only goes into the complex. Weird.

I was out of power from about 8pm Friday night to about 11 o'clock last night. It was really awful. I don't have a laptop or a smartphone, so I don't know if those still get a signal in a power outage, so I was totally reliant on my crank-up radio and my emergency non-cordless phone.

The really bad thing was no radio station was doing non-stop news or information, so I was trying to find news, and all the programming was music or cooking shows or Car Talk. Then when the radio stations did do news, they'd say "complete information on our website", which was useless to me. Duquesne Light had an automated message about "due to the volume of calls, we are not taking calls, please be patient." It was really frustrating, and you'd think in this day and age the media and the utilities and the city, even, would have a plan for this kind of thing.

Oh, and street still hasn't been plowed, and yahoos are still trying to drive on it.

Glad to hear that you've finally found the outside world again!

I ran into the Duquesne Light message too. I was also annoyed that our township office wasn't open. When a state of emergency disaster is declared, our local government offices should open up on the weekends. There was nobody to call about the condition of the roads. There was nobody to all to find out if an emergency shelter had been opened in the township. When there is no electricity, the only way to obtain information is via telephone, yet nobody was manning the phones at the township.

Finally, the snow plow guy is coming today. I guess kids just don't want to make money these days.

They are definitely making money! There's a lot of work out there and your house is LOW PRIORITY!

The plow guy who lives in my neighborhood has been MIA since 7:00am yesterday. We're worried he might be in the hospital.

I'm referring to high school kids with shovels. Years ago after a heavy snow fall a couple of teenagers with a pickup truck and snow blowers knocked on my door. Couldn't believe it, actually thought some McCandless rich kids were looking for money. Nah, they were from Millvale raking in some cash.

I can't speak for all teenagers but mine were out shoveling the neighbors out for free yesterday. My husband was too.

My family is just like that. We even mow our neighbors lawns' when they are away on vacation or become disabled.

As a result, our neighbors have always done the same for us when we were on vacation.

When our kids were younger, they'd help me shovel myself out if my husband was out of town.

My husband has always done this for neighbors. He has taught our children well.

I like to think that he played a large role in our neighborhood being so neighborly.
