Just woke up and peeked out the window--doesn't look like much has changed. There's still a thick layer of snow on the road and it doesn't look like a plow came through. There's an abandoned van stuck in the middle of the intersection that wasn't there yesterday. For the last few minutes, I've heard another car desperately revving up and trying to get un-stuck.

Keep in mind that I live on what is normally a busy road.

I see that Pittsburgh City Schools have already closed, so I can only assume that conditions are equally terrible elsewhere in the city.

I went to Giant Eagle in Settlers Ridge and the roads are fine out this way. Steubenville Pike and Campbells Run are mostly clear, except for a few snow covered turn lanes.

The Boulevard of the Allies is cleared only about a lane in each direction in South Oakland, and by cleared i mean mostly plowed but is still predominantly just packed snow. The street I live on, Parkview Avenue, has not been cleared at all. Only a few adventuresome trucks/SUVs have packed it down just a bit. A man right now is going up and down the street with a snowblower and as far as I know he's only a simple bystander volunteering. I could be wrong of course.

I just came in from shoveling a path out my back door, through the yard, and down the driveway. I didn't even make it to the street. It about killed me. One side of my property is a set of city steps, but I couldn't shovel them like I usually do. Maybe tomorrow.

Don't go down Beaver Grade to Clever. I was there this morning and it was a layer of ice covered over with a layer of snow. Apparently PennDot is responsible for this stretch of road because the mall area was mostly clear and Robinson side was done as well.

I hope they scraped it by now. It was scary to drive it! We were all going about 10 miles an hour.

So around noon we went out to Cranberry. My road is perfect. One side road I use to get over to Freedom Rd was not as perfect, but it's smaller and shadier so not unexpected. Freedom Rd was patchy, some clear, some very hard packed, not really unexpected given what I've seen with this road over the last several years.

At Powell we could see a big backup ahead, so we turned left and went over to Rochester Rd. Powell, the side road, was not too bad. Rochester, though, was terrible. It was all covered, like driving down a rutted, unpaved road (dirt/gravel) except slippery when you try to stop. And, the final insult, Rt 19. Much of that, between Rochester and Cranberry Mall, was about as bad as Rochester. Then the parking lot was nice and clear. Heck, after going to Giant Eagle we took the pathway around the back of the building, and even THAT was better than Rt 19! Why the heck should this be?

Cranberry and/or PennDOT clearly did something wrong. The middle of Cranberry is 5 miles by roads from my house, so a little less than that by air. Their snowfall amount and type couldn't be that much different than what we've got right here. So why is my non-route-number road perfectly clear and US Rt 19 covered in frozen packed snow? Can only be bad handling.

So now I don't know whether I should head to work tomorrow or not. Some schools are already closed. (Another thing I need to fix: somehow my cell number is on USC school district's call list. At least two numbers ring my cell so I don't know which it is, but I know they're closed tomorrow!) My road is bare, but I'm guessing others still won't be. Although I don't drive through Cranberry to get to work, if anything I need to drive on looks like that, I'd want to avoid it.

The Giant Eagle seemed to have stock of bread, milk, eggs, TP. But I have heard the one at Camp Horne Rd had a power outage and all the cold/frozen food is gone. http://img50.yfrog.com/i/bpkz.jpg/ (broken link)
